Anyone who actually calls himself – or is called – “G-Rod” needs to be treated with the utmost suspicion at the best of times.

Have to say I was about to type virtually the same as Purwell.

No one should be following anyone.

And anyone who says they haven’t got time to study form hasn’t got time to follow racing and bet at all in my book.

If you trust your own judgement, there’s no one else to let you down – and no one else to blame.

But what about all the gaffer bonza pukka bets we get from “keals”? Surely they’re worth the 40 quid a month alone?

Not to mention the award winning journalism from the award winning journalist Lee “if I simply plagiarise Alistair Down’s writing style I’ll sound more intelligent and professional than I ever could be” Mottershead?

    Or Maddy [edited] playle!

You guys don’t know value you when it smacks you in the face!

An Asteroid ( maybe it was called Alexander) struck the earth and the dinosaurs were wiped out along with their outdated way of thinking.
    Yet Tizzards cider you survived.

    Haha what?

Could you sound any more foolish? An asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs because it was an enormous lump of rock entering the earths atmosphere that caused such devastation it wiped out nearly all life on earth.

I survived because I’m only 42 years old and there weren’t even humans around for me to be a twinkle in their eye.

So now we’ve got that part cleared up. Tell me what’s outdated about my thinking? Am I not allowed to be critical of people that write for the racing post or be sceptical as to why they’re in the position they are in the first place?

I don’t need to go down to your level to get a point across.
But if I did, while we were grovelling about in the gutter no one would be able to tell the difference between us.

I wouldn’t know why any of the trio got their current role – I only ever worked with one of them, Paul Kealy, and as I recall he lived locally to the original RP offices in Raynes Park, joined as a copy taker, worked hard, worked his way up and has made a lifelong career out of being at the paper.

    Good luck to him.

Six years was more than enough of them all for me – and very possibly more than enough of me for all of them.

Paul was a really decent bloke, actually, and still was the last time I saw him at the races.

Wouldn’t know about the other two – Lee Mottershead’s writing isn’t really to my taste but I do think Maddy Playle has done some interesting broadcast interviews, notably with John Francome.

I enjoy listening to Kealy on the podcasts I hear him on. No reason for me to hold any of them in disregard from a personal point of view.

I do however have an issue with the quality of the content the likes of Mottershead, maddy playle and numerous others produce.

I do also find that the editorial content of the racing post tries too hard to extol the virtues of its staff.

Maybe it is me with the problem like Sam says. But for me a large portion of their staff seem to have very little knowledge of their subject.

Throw in stomach churning self congratulatory applause ad infinitum it just becomes increasingly difficult to read.

Often hear things like “inform” where a trainer has had a winner,
    just the one…

Agree with the comments its best to find your own picks and live and die by your own sword.

Tipsters. If I found a way to make money by betting, would you like to guess how many people I’d tell how I did it?

Criticism is fine Tizaard, it doesn’t even need to be constructive, but it can’t be offensive so I’ve edited your post.

For what its worth, Lee Mottershead is thoroughly professional in both his writing and conduct. I don’t think his writing is stylised in the mode of Alastair Down at all. May not be everyone’s cup of tea, fair enough, but your two points are well wide of the mark.

Your other comment was offensive and has been removed. I’ve pm’d you.

I’m satisfied that you’ve acted admin.
I came into this thread because I thought the comments you have removed were indeed offensive and should have no place on the forum or anywhere for that matter.
I’ve been on the receiving end of this poster’s comments and it is good to see some action taken on this occasion and without it, it would have reduced the forum to little better than betfair’s forum.

“I do also find that the editorial content of the racing post tries too hard to extol the virtues of its staff.”

I’m not going to join any sort of mini pile on on TC.

I can’t support what he originally wrote, and can understand why Admin acted, but overall I find him an open, straight talking, and often witty contributor here and hopefully he can continue to be so, though after this possibly a slightly more circumspect one.

I’d like to pick up on the above quote from him, as it surely touches upon the elephant in the room.

Anyone who is a long-term winning punter doesn’t need the kind of salary the Racing Post offers – they can live off betting.

And yet the RP needs to do a hard sell on it’s staff to try to generate sales.

Tbh, racing journalism has always been the emperors new clothes in my eyes – people used to rave about Alastair Down and I’d just think: “Jeffrey Bernard wannabe – and I never rated Bernard.”

I think Greg Wood at The Guardian is good, Chris Cook’s not bad either, though he doesn’t have quite the same editorial freedom now he’s at the RP, and that’s literally it.

And as for all newspaper tipsters, I’d be equally interested (ie not interested) in the opinion of your cat.

Making your own mind up is the only way forward.

“Tipsters. If I found a way to make money by betting, would you like to guess how many people I’d tell how I did it?”

Not for the first time, Richard nails it with an economy of words I could only ever dream of.
