Ian – what gives you the right to expect something for free?
It is their service, it they want to charge it’s up to them, and up to you whether to pay for it.
You can label people ‘fat cats’ all you want, but if businesses don’t make money, they go out of business, and then you wouldn’t have a website.
Its survived how long? It will still survive if it remained free.
Why pay for something you’ve already had for free, you’d have to be a bit daft to want to wouldn’t you?

How much do such as Google, Wikipedia, Youtube etc. charge, and how long would they survive if they did?

Why anyone would pay for Pricewise when it’s on the Betfair forum from when the paper hits King’s Cross is beyond me…Rory wrote :The RP are starting a new, online only Pricewise service on a daily basis.
Surely the online only Pricewise selections will also appear on the BF forum as soon as they are published?
November 12, 2008 at 16:41 #189366Depends if the person paying for it are gullible enough to pay for it and then tell everyone else about it Corm.
November 12, 2008 at 17:44 #189380I like the music on the ‘Take Tour’ video. Rest of site is ok but I won’t be paying for it.

My point wasn’t that I actively want to pay for it, more that it’s their right to charge if they want, and shouldn’t be labelled fat cats for doing so.
Google relies on advertising and pay per click for income, Wikipedia, whilst entertaining, is riddled with errors as it is compiled by its users, and Youtube again relies on users for content with some advertising.
The advertising options open to the RP are significantly less numerous than those available to Google, and you wouldn’t want it to be user compiled and thus full of errors, would you?
The other thing is that RP are publishing on the site info which they are charging £1.60 for in the paper – hardly a sustainable business model not that everyone has got the internet. I used to buy the paper most days – now only buy it on a Saturday (for nostalgia more than anything), and when I’m going racing.
Surprised the site’s been free for so long actually, and would be more than prepared to pay, say £10 per month to use it.
November 12, 2008 at 18:18 #189391Is there any indication as to when they will start charging for access?
November 13, 2008 at 01:32 #189460Any thoughts on how an £8 per month RP sub would affect liquidity and pricing on Betfair, or wouldn’t it?
November 13, 2008 at 01:37 #189465Comparing the RP with google shows little understanding of the current state of things.
RP is a specialist, niche publication.
People need to understand a concept of business .. it’s whether it will be worth paying for what you get is an entire other question.

Salse
I’d be reasonably certain they’d be looking to maximise profits, and I’d take an educated guess that cutting off the income stream that has served well thus far wouldn’t be a good place to start.
Canvassing their customers to establish whether they’d tolerate charges hardly sugggests they’ve cornered the market, either.November 24, 2008 at 16:59 #191752I think the old racing post website is fantastic, I cannot believe its free to use and thats its took them so long to decide to charge for using it.

Are you sure you don’t work for them, Lincoln?
If you do, maybe you could ask them why they haven’t got around to Wednesday’s Wolverhampton decs just yet?November 25, 2008 at 05:24 #191939Ian – what gives you the right to expect something for free?

Yes but they have advertising, a very successful method of financing a website. I would have thought links to a bookmakers site should be very lucrative.
How many visitors to the site buy the RP newspaper as well? I do and expect to continue to do so. That will be the limit to the money I will be spending.
