Aren’t Gdansk and Danzig the same place?
December 16, 2009 at 08:24 #264039Do you remember Bob Wyatt? Was driven very slowly through Bradfield last night to get a full appreciation of the Christmas lights. I’m not sure what it was like in your day, but Oxford Street doesn’t hold a candle to it!
rory
I do remember Bob Wyatt. A very nice chap who used to deliver our milk, and I believe that any money donated for his lighting display goes to charity in memory of his late wife who died from cancer. Bob serves as a member of the Parish council and has done for many years. He was the trend setter as far as the Southend Bradfield lights were concerned and visitors approaching from Bucklebury are still greeted by Santa’s sleigh on the wall, but the whole thing has ramped up to an unbelievable level these days. I understand people come from far and wide to see the lighting displays.
Rob
P.S. For anyone curious to know what we are on about, look at the photos with this news story

December 16, 2009 at 08:38 #264041Indeed they are Rory – one of my favourite racing quiz questions is "Which handicap sprinter is also a leading sire?"
December 16, 2009 at 09:28 #264045Thanks for that Rob – a genuine Christmas story!
December 16, 2009 at 15:26 #264103I grew up in an Arkle crescent but was named after the river/ beck in Swaledale rather than the horse i believe. Then moved onto Cheltenham Court ironically. I didn’t move there because of the name however haha
December 16, 2009 at 16:28 #264116Up in the far North of Scotland, my original locale, we have CANISBAY (1965 Eclipse Stakes winner), a small village located near the Castle of Mey where the Queen Mother had a residence.
December 16, 2009 at 16:46 #264119I live not to far from Coleorton which has been the beginning of quite a few horses recently.
December 16, 2009 at 17:54 #264127I thought I’d manage to think of a few more if I put my mind to it – so here goes !

Isle of Wight – (winning steeplechaser but forgotten when !
)Isle of Man (good winning steeplechaser for the Queen Mother)
Green Island (two horses of this name – one a filly owned by the Queen and a winner at Haydock for her back in the 1970’s – the other, a winner over hurdles and fences in recent years)
Cuba (winner on the flat and dam of winner Fidel, who used to be trained by Doug Smith back in the 1960’s I think – maybe 1970’s)
Tristan da Cunha (winning filly on the flat in Ireland)
Johannesburg (good winner on the flat for Aidan O’Brien – now a sire)
Tuxford (winning steeplechaser for Owen Brennan, I think)
Newfoundland (winner on the flat in Ireland)
New South Wales [/color:nryte4b0](winner on the flat in Ireland)
Grand Canyon (good ex New Zealand horse and winner of the Colonial Cup, as well as other good races)
New York [/color:nryte4b0](point to point winner in the 1970’s in Scotland)
Chicago (good winning stayer on the flat for Harry Wragg)
Montreal (winner over hurdles back in the 1970’s I think)
USA States
Alabama (winner on the flat)
Kentucky (winner over fences in the 1950’s)
[b:nryte4b0]Louisiana[/color:nryte4b0][/b:nryte4b0] (winner on the flat in the 1960’s)
[b:nryte4b0]Nebraska[/color:nryte4b0][/b:nryte4b0] (Irish point to point winner – may also have won under NH rules there)
New Mexico (winner on the flat)
Tennessee (winner over hurdles for the Dickinsons in the 1970’s )
Utah (steeplechasing winner – I forget which decade)
Wisconsin (I think he was a winner over fences)I’ll try to add a few more from remote outposts of the globe !
December 16, 2009 at 19:53 #264158^^…and you still forgot Yellowstone

I think the intention of the original poster’s question was to state those places we have actually visited in our time. I am pleased to report I have at least travelled the entire length of the Yellowstone River..
so there
December 22, 2009 at 19:46 #264979Have driven through Morgannwg (or Glamorgan).
If I recall he was a useful mile handicapper about 15yrs ago. I always remember Julian Wilson used to pronounce it MOR-GANN-OOOG!

The Olive Jackson owned version? You get points for remembering if you do! Jessica Harrington had Ulaan Baatar a few years ago and there was one called Oulan Bator more recently.
December 23, 2009 at 23:47 #265235There’s Omaha-US Triple Crown winner, later came to England and won the Victor Wild S. and Queen’s Plate and a close 2nd in the Prince of Wales and Ascot Gold Cup.
. Following a not-so-successful stud career in Kentucky, he was moved to his namesake city, where he was regularly
paraded at Ak-Sar-Ben racetrack and sometimes grazed in the infield.December 24, 2009 at 08:30 #265261Never been there but can i claim Ulan Bator?

Couldn’t tell you. I just remember it coming in handy when the question "What is the capital of Mongolia?" came up in a pub quiz once.
One more. Wolverhampton (ran in 1974 National).
The city was never the same once the tramp on the ring road died.
