I suppose for flat fans, at least there is a competition for the title. Also, wasn’t Ryan Moore the favourite a few weeks ago? Two differing characters with very different styles seems interesting enough for me.
Besides, whilst the horses are the absolute stars of the show, some still acknowledge that jockeys are people too.
October 13, 2014 at 07:48 #492199The title seems important to the jockeys involved. It’s got to be a huge boost to the ego and to the career to be able to call yourself Champion. Who wouldn’t want to be the champion in what they do? Certainly means a lot to AP.
October 13, 2014 at 08:16 #492202The bookies haven’t paid out on Hughes yet.
They must be half expecting him to fall off at some point.Blackbeard to conquer the World
October 13, 2014 at 08:51 #492205Ryan Moore quite rightly doesn’t seem to give one hoot about this title.
October 13, 2014 at 11:11 #492209Maybe it’s something to do with the opportunity of riding around the world for prize money hundred times greater than Kempton on a cold, wet October night
October 13, 2014 at 16:58 #492247When the jockeys aren’t bothered about the title why should anyone else be ?
October 13, 2014 at 17:49 #492250Agree that it is always given far more coverage than it merits.
October 13, 2014 at 18:02 #492251I get the impression that it’s something jockeys aren’t remotely bothered about…until it looks like they may win it.

That said, I suspect there are two reasons why the RP and their paymasters in the BHA, ATR and RUK are so interested
1) As someone has already said, there usually is a contest for the title, unlike the jumps.
2) They need to keep people interested in The Flat after most fans have turned their attention to National Hunt.

So don't run, just like the others always do
January 25, 2015 at 10:34 #502849How much drivel have you heard so far about the all weather duel between Morris & Kirby from Mapletoft, Weaver et al, especially at ATR but this "thriller" so far has failed to attract one penny of interest on the Betfair market and it appears not one bookmaker is betting on it according to oddschecker.
January 25, 2015 at 13:05 #502883Is the only way you can gauge interest in an event by how much people are betting on it?
I think because so much of the winter AW season is guff that very few racing fans(rather than punters) are interested in the media have to try and invent rivalries or talk up championships to stoke some interest.

Not really but it’s a good guide for things like this, you can be sure if there was interest in it, bookmakers would be betting on it if there’s money to be made.
Even I was amazed though that not a penny piece had been wagered on it on Betfair.
The public have no interest in it, no one has discussed it with me but Mapletoft can’t stop waxing lyrical about it at every all weather meeting he covers. Completely OTT. -
