Ian,
Commentating on US races not really difficult is it – nothing longer than 10F, rarely more than 10 runners.
Take a look at Louisiana Downs card today – seven races, starting with a maiden claimer over 1F, ending with a maiden claimer over 2F, and nothing longer than 4F in between.
Pretty sure a 1F race would flummox Thommo, who’d still be telling us’they’re not hanging about here’ as they cross the finish line.
February 8, 2022 at 13:12 #1582088I just like the theatrical big-race commentary style for things like the Breeders’ Cup and the Triple Crown.
Arazi and American Pharoah in particular stick in the memory.

The Americans could put Thommo on a “They’re not hanging about here” loop and then hit the “I’ll leave that one to the judge” button as they cross the line.
February 8, 2022 at 14:59 #1582099This Australian commentator put everything he had into it. Starts about 1 min 45 seconds in:
August 31, 2024 at 14:24 #1706175Jerry Hannon seamlessly styling it out in the first at the Curragh today ” stretching its lead is Acaupulco Bay, now by a widening three lengths to stablemate Genealogy who’s trimming the deficit to a couple of lengths…”
September 1, 2024 at 11:16 #1706228The clown then stammered some kind of nonsense with 20 yards to go in the irish Cambridgeshire and commentated Ryan Moore on the winner after the winning line !!!

Fantastic ride from Moore BTW.
