Alan Lee of The Times has died – very sad and a great loss:

December 20, 2015 at 10:47 #1226578As you say, this is very sad news indeed.
As a regular reader of his columns in The Times I can say that he was a wordsmith of considerable talent. His contributions to that newspaper will be greatly missed.
RIP.
December 20, 2015 at 11:44 #1226582Yeah, I liked him
He always provided a more thoughtful counterpoint to the shouters on The Sunday Forum
Must be fairly rare for a chap to be The Times leading correspondent in 2 different sports as he had been the Cricket Correspondent before switching to racing
Nice tributes on The Sunday Forum today
RIP
December 20, 2015 at 12:27 #1226586I don’t read the Times but I always enjoyed Alan’s contributions on the Sunday Forum. And I have a copy of his book from the 80s on Cheltenham racecourse which is a good read.
A shock to see him go. RIP.
December 20, 2015 at 12:46 #1226587Very sad news, a real gentleman.
December 20, 2015 at 17:52 #1226610Big shock, this.
Always looked a robust, healthy man onscreen. Had no idea he had heart trouble.
He came across as patrician and I never had much time for his opinions on Racing, betting in particular. He did write well on racing’s “people” though. I was at Lingfield the day Fallon came back from his long ban, Alan Lee was there as well. As Fallon emerged from the weighing room for his first mount, the press predictably descended on the tense frightened looking Clareman. Lee didn’t join in though. He stepped back against the winners enclosure rail and studied Fallon and his body language closely, which I thought was interesting.
Anyway he’s gone far too young.
Rest In Peace.
December 20, 2015 at 19:26 #1226614Loved him times columns. Thoughtful and looked at the sport as a whole.
A genuine shock
December 20, 2015 at 19:46 #1226616That’s terrible news, RIP Alan.
He was an absolutely outstanding journalist, winning many awards for his writing on racing and cricket.
December 20, 2015 at 19:55 #1226617Absolutely stunned and shocked by this news.
I saw him and had a brief chat with him at Ascot on Friday and he looked to be he usual self – I just cannot believe 24 hours later he was dead.
A brilliant wordsmith who loved racing and cricket and a gentleman as well.
He has passed far too soon – thoughts with his family and friends
December 20, 2015 at 21:50 #1226627Paul. I was there too ! Didn’t know you were back mate
But yes. Bet it hit hard
December 21, 2015 at 08:49 #1226645Shocked to be honest. I never knew he had heart trouble. Came across as a very nice man on Sunday Forum and his views were always very well put across.
R.I.P Alan, thoughts with his family and friends.
December 21, 2015 at 10:36 #1226648A genuinely erudite and thoughtful contributor to both racing and cricket, with an understanding of the realpolitik of both sports.
Sadly, a second premature passing for The Times’ Chief Cricket Correspondent following that of Christopher Martin-Jenkins a couple of years ago.

December 21, 2015 at 18:27 #1226717As a regular reader of The Times I shall much miss Alan Lee’s always thoughtful and well researched articles. I recall with particular pleasure the series of reports he did on each of Britain’s racecourses a few years ago. I have since visited all the tracks and can bear witness to the accuracy of what he wrote. I can remember seeing him at many tracks since, from the top grade to the humblest. A great loss. My thoughts with his family.
December 23, 2015 at 10:42 #1226860Very saddened and shocked by the news. Always seemed such a vibrant character and clearly loved horse racing and cricket. The forum with Matt c,Lee with the likes of Chris cook and big Mac were a delight to watch. Always great to listen too within great knowledge of the sport. Will greatly miss him on the Sunday forum.
