I am checking the entries for Noland at the weekend, looking through his four entries I come across the "EXETER RACECOURSE CONFERENCE CENTRE NOVICES’ CHASE (CLASS 3)".
Will anyone take the trouble to explain to me the reason why the bottom 13 entries have an extra digit appended next to the horses race name?
If a race is over subscribed those deemed to have the lowest ratings will get ballot marks.
If a horse hasn’t had enough runs to get a handicap mark it gets preference over those that have as the assessor doesn’t know how good it is.
Weight for age in a handicap for instance though can lead to a lower rated horse getting in at the expense of a higher rated older horse.
If a horse doesn’t qualify for a race there will be no weight against its name at the bottom of the racecard after the weights come out.
If there are too many entered in a race and more than the safety number permits are declaered to run…those who have ballot marks go into a draw (like the lotterry) to see which ones will run……… they can’t eliminate by weights as they are all the same

No, the ballot number determines the order in which they cannot run. Highest number = more likely to get in. The ballot numbers are determined by the race conditions.
