I’ve backed Mahogany Blaze in the the market without the favourite, at 25/1 with Corals.
MB got closest to Master Minded three out at Ascot, but paid the price for that effort and was re-passed by Petit Robin. Given there was only five lengths between them at the line, MB will be happier going left-handed (course winner last year) and Twister is in (slightly) better form than he was then, I’m not sure how TDK has Petit Robin at 7/2 and MB at 25/1.
The significant factor in this race within a race might well be which horses are ridden just to finish second, against those that take on the favourite at some stage.

As much as Ilike Master minded, and perahaps I dont like him as much as many.
This is a crap card for the Queeen mother, often the most exciting race of the festival. I suppose that is partly down to the Ryanair but its a shame to see it like this. I for one, will be using this race as time to make tea.SHL

Thats why Master Minded is so short there’s absolutely no competition his rivals are all 150’s horses you may get one sneak into the 160’s. Well Chief is gone would be a near miracle if he’s the same horse as he was a few years back, Voy Por Ustedes is much better over further. Tidal Bay is probably the second best two mile chaser but he lacks speed over the minumum trip and is probably better over further – thats it what else is there?
Not totally in agreement with Aristo regarding Twist Magic maybe this horse could spring from the pack to throw down some sort of challenge but whether he’s a short runner or just a funny bugger its unlikely.
Master Minded is a very good horse but in terms of what he has to beat it must be the equivalent of putting Man United in the second division.
March 11, 2009 at 00:41 #215070Well i got the CH wrong fancying 2/3 Henderson runners! It looks like we need something to do a "Punjabi" and defeat MM. What can improve or is good enough if MM stays upright? Big Zeb? Well Chief ?? Briareus??? i’ve backed the latter more through hope than anything else relative novice so could improve a bit, jockeys not too bad but all in all a poor renewal. Shame one of my favourite races pocket wise over the years.
March 11, 2009 at 01:55 #215110Well Chief would give Master Minded a serious race if he ran up to the form that he reached against Moscow Flyer & Azertyuiop. Unfortunately after such a long layoff that’s highly unlikely to happen.
Even if he’s retained only a quarter of his ability he’d still be better than the rest of this lineup outside of MM.

well chief is the one for me, betting without master minded looks a steel at 4/1
March 11, 2009 at 13:05 #215218Im also of the opinion Well Cheif could be the one to either chase MM home or capitilise on an error.Worth a bet imo
March 11, 2009 at 15:44 #215256I’m probably talking garbage!!!
i don’t understand this NH game but what exactly has MM beaten apart from VPU who has inclined to have a few not so good uns. Theres nothing special on the clock, never really been asked to dig deep and battle, what if the race is not run to suit and he has to battle. All that said the oppo is not that strong but give the hype a rest and as for these ratings well, we’ve all seen horses with wonderfull ratings before. Should win but i hope something makes a race of it for the viewers.

I don’t disagree with you to an extent. Master Minded has no opposition of any quality to beat. Regardless of what anyone says Voy Por didn’t run his race in last years Champion Chase and other than him Master Minded has beaten nothing that is a genuine Grade 1 horse. Thats why I don’t class him as automatically superior to Moscow Flyer who had Azertyuiop and an at peak Well Chief to contend with.
That said Master Minded can do nothing more than slam his second rate opposition.
March 11, 2009 at 16:28 #215278As a long time Badsworth Boy fan, I have to admit that I thought it would be a long time until I saw his equal.
However, in Master Minded, I now believe we have a horse which just may prove to be his superior – and quite possibly the best two miler we have ever seen – yes Fists, even better than old Flyingbolt
. The way MM jumps his fences and quickens away from them is simply a joy to behold – and what an engine he has. He simply oozes class. If he stays fit and healthy he”ll win next year’s QMCC too – as well as today’s. He’s a machine. Lets’ face it, barring a fall he should hack up today.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
March 11, 2009 at 20:36 #215356Master Minded wins but is this horse really as good as Moscow Flyer? I don’t think so he had to work hard today and his only "amazing" performance was in this race last year when Voy Por didn’t run his race, they went too fast too early and the rest of the opposition was awful. He certainly ISN’T a 180’s horse.
Fantastic run from Well Chief not the horse he was but my god that was a great run given his circumstances and a great training performance.
March 11, 2009 at 20:38 #215357MM done no wrong, and he was pretty much faultless. Those false starts didn’t help of course.
March 11, 2009 at 20:39 #215358Well Chief; the highest rated 2 mile chaser not to win the Championship..what a horse..what might have been….
March 11, 2009 at 20:39 #215359Great run from Well Chief – just a pity he’s had leg troubles. I’m sure worse horses than him have actually won the QM Chase.
March 11, 2009 at 20:43 #215360I don’t understand this training malarkey – far too complicated and subtle for me to follow. Apparently, MM wasn’t trained to be at a peak, as that wasn’t required to win this race. By not having him so finely tuned, it increases his career longevity.
March 11, 2009 at 20:44 #215361Well Chief, what a performance, what a training achievement! I know that Master Minded won but what an engine WC must have and what courage!!
March 11, 2009 at 20:45 #215362Master Minded wins but is this horse really as good as Moscow Flyer?
No he’s actually far better, the ground wasnt as much in his favour today as last year and would have been perfect for Well Chief, Briareus and Petit Robin and he still smashed them easily enough.
Moscow Flyer would get a sniff at Master Minded before the turn but that would be it IMO, the best horse in training by a mile….
