It was heat of the moment stuff from Frankie surely
I hoped so too, but apparantly he was still raging about it on Sunday (so said Claire Balding anyway).
I kind of wish O’Brien had taken the high road and kept his council, but I suppose it just goes to show how angry he feels about it himself.
One little correction to an earlier post: Dylan Thomas was not in the Derby as a pacemaker. The plan was not to send him to the front at all, but he shot out of the gates and pulled so Murtagh let him go there.
September 25, 2006 at 12:59 #77599That being so GF, I would think that there is something else digging away at him at the moment…

Indeed, Murtagh’s services have not been called on much since then have they?
September 25, 2006 at 13:45 #77601No, but DT pulled too hard at York as well.

September 25, 2006 at 14:00 #77602Are you saying Murtagh gave DT, a 16/1 shot, a bad ride in the Derby Aidan?
September 25, 2006 at 14:03 #77603Thats what Aidan O’Brien said when he specifically gave him orders to hold the horse up and he made sure the jockey knew how he felt.

September 26, 2006 at 00:50 #77604In all fairness, Murtagh’s services have not exactly been needed since the Derby. Other than with Aussie Rules in the Eclipse, when have they been stuck for a jockey?
Just looking at comments on rp.co.uk about controversial races, here’s what was written about the Eclipse 2003.
In fairness, the race did not really go his way here, for having sat handily behind his pacemaker, he was done no favours at all by the Godolphin second string Narrative, who came across him and sat in front of him after swinging wide straightening for home, and then moved sharply right and bumped him as he went by.
And then about the Irish Champ Stakes 2001 –
Tactics played an important part, and the consensus was that Godolphin got it absolutely right with the move by Give The Slip that allowed Fantastic Light to take up the inside position off the final bend, forcing Galileo a couple of horses wide in the process.
And the Derby 2006, concerning Papal Bull –
hester Vase winner Papal Bull ran much better than his finishing position suggests, as he didn’t come down the hill well but was at last making good headway up the inside rail when he was stopped in his tracks by Linda’s Lad two furlongs out. He couldn’t recover – in fact, he didn’t look entirely happy afterwards – but he had been motoring at the time and might well have been in the frame if he had sustained his run.
That extract above, coupled with Robert Winston’s comments, doesn’t show Frankie is the best of lights.
But it seems to me from the top 2 extracts, that Frankie is perfectly fine for Godolphin horses to get in the way of Ballydoyle horses, but when a Ballydoyle horse is running to try and get the best position he can, and Frankie is pushed wide going round the bend when he shouldn’t even have been there, Dettori has the balls to cry foul.
I’m fed-up with Frankie, I really am. I have always said I wouldn’t have him in my top 10 jockeys. Did anybody see his ride on Cast In Gold at Newbury on 16th Sept? Completely clear, had the race won, then loses it.
Another example – Abby Road’s debut. I backed her at SP, and saw Frankie flying on her after a couple of furlongs, looking very decent for the win – suprise suprise, she gets nailed on the line.
He hasn’t got the strength to sustain a long tussle to the line, simple as that. I’d rather have George Duffield in the saddle than Frankie these days.

A bit harsh maybe?
I’m sure EC would tell you he’s a good judge of pace ;)
September 26, 2006 at 01:18 #77606That’s all he’s got. He’s stolen enough Group 1s from the front already to last a lifetime. Shamardal should never have beaten Hurricane Run.
Suprise suprise, I found another Godolphin pacemaker incident, King George 2001 –
Mutamam may not have achieved quite so much as first thought at Newmarket last time. It’s also possible that this came too quickly on the heels of that effort, while Give The Slip did his job as pacemaker admirably again even to the point of hindering one of Fantastic Light’s main rivals as he dropped away. He surely deserves another chance to run on his own merits.
Also was interesting to read today how Sheikh Mohammed refuses to buy horses by Coolmore sires. Convenient that comes AFTER Shamardal, Doyen, Refuse to Bend…….Does that mean he’ll sell them to different stud farms if he doesn’t want to profit from Coolmore?
No? Funny that………;)
September 26, 2006 at 09:40 #77607Instead of all these ant Dettori outpourings as well as the attempts to promote a Coolmore or Godolphin vote why do not those who disagree with heffernan’s ban turn their ire on the Stewards. I was not aware that dettori was judge and jury?
As for Coolmore or Godolphin lets acknowledge that racing would be the poorer if either packed it up. As a small breeder ( 6 broodmares) Darley’s support is phenomenal and exceptionally good for british breeding. There passion for horse racing is a lifeline for our industry and obviously it is a pity that recently they have not got as good as results in the UK as they would have hoped.
Long may both organisations continue.
