Raced with the choke out for a fair way in the triumph behind todays favourite and Zarkandar, beaten a couple of lengths, before being brought down at Aintree when travelling like the winner on his last start (settled beautifully and jumped superbly) – again, behind Zarkandar.
He gets a 2lb pull with Unaccompanied on Cheltenham running, and I feel a reverse is surely on the cards here.
May 7, 2011 at 10:47 #354261Very keen on Elyaadi in the 3.45 at 12.

Keep an eye on the market i’d say it’ll be the best guide.Quite fancy her myself,I know the owners pretty well and if they fancy it there’ll be a bit of money going down, tried ring Micheal there and no luck getting through! Might back it anyway

Thanks for the tip, Fran. He wasn’t far behind the favourite in the betting; do you think if they’d fancied him, he’d probably have been clear favourite? I did have a saver on ShopDJ, as she was the moral winner of her penultimate (listed) race at Newbury in late March. She was giving weight, but she’s only a pip squeak.
What had impressed me about Elyaadi was that she was easily beaten into second by Junior in the Ascot Stakes, although she was giving him 4lbs; while he beat Aaim To Prosper, giving him 6 lbs. He was apparently never in the race, it seems, but he must surely be worth watching.
May 7, 2011 at 16:48 #354314Has something changed over the past couple of years, because I’m sure that, when we used to go to Punchestown a few years back, it was almost unheard of for an English trained horse to win there [although we did miss the middle part of the week while we travelled around the country]?

Didn’t get talking to them but had a few pound on at 12’s and then seen the price just before the off and thought lovely stuff
Unfortunately it wasn’t to be!
I presume today was meant to be the day and things didn’t pan out as expected, few iffy jumps and also i’d say Timmy expected the boys up front to stop turning for home which didn’t really happen! Grandouet was my saving grace today and won in good style! Thank God i talked myself out of backing Beautiful sound!May 8, 2011 at 21:28 #354498I’m glad about that. I always try to keep not too far from my mind, that saying of Mr Mikawber along the lines of:
Annual income, £20.00, expenditure £19.95, result happiness; annual income £20.00, expenditure £20.05, result misery.
I’d wanted to do Grandouet, but it slipped my mind, until it was too late. But it could well have been my state of mind. I’d had a good win and a smaller but appreciable double, and the euphoria engendered by such wins really scrambles my mind. As does losing badly. So I tend to pull my horns in and do only one or two bets to small amounts on old timers who are overdue. I should have kept with the class animals and bet on Grandouet.
I have turned over a new leaf though. Minimal betting in relation to small meetings, and putting larger amounts in relation to the quality races, usually ante post.
If I continued to bet on gaffs, having taken on board my record on such bets, it would be the definition of madness: continuing to do the same thing and expecting a different outcome – as well as compulsive gambling.
May 8, 2011 at 22:37 #354526What a scintillating festival. Horses I have tracked all season did me well (Grandouet, Big Zeb, Quevega), some not so, but it was good fun. Can’t wait for spring next year!
