Trainers are always complaining about the lack of prize money but there are several decent races tomorrow on the Flat with hardly any entries (2 at Newmarket worth £40K each and a £100K at Newbury). I then notice that there is a four year old hurdle at Auteuil tomorrow with £157K to the winner and the savvy Mr Mullins has three entries; why no British based entries? Why with all the good races at Auteuil is there always a lack of British entries?

Presumably it’s because unlike the flat racing, France’s jumps season follows a different structure to that in the UK and Ireland. While ours begins in early winter and culminates with the spring fesitvals, the French have two jumps seasons so to speak, a spring one and an autumn one. As such, the French horses will be resting during our big winter meetings and our horses will be over the top come the French spring races.
