Isn’t the real reason why Cameron and his predecessors over the last ten years have found it difficult to define ‘what the Conservatives stand for’ and have failed to devise radical policies that would make a disillusioned electorate perk up its ears is because there’s essentially no difference in philosophy between them and ‘new’ Labour?

I’d go further by saying that in an increasingly post (smokestack) industrial West the time-honoured ideologies of ‘right’ and ‘left’ wing manifesting themselves as ‘us and them’ ‘blue and white collar’ seem less and less relevant. The populace now comprise two classes: a large homogenous affluent ‘working class’ and a much smaller ‘underclass’. And factoring in the EEC and the quick march to globalisation, both of which imo necessitates that the internal political make up of a country is of little importance compared to that of the world stage, then it would seem obvious that there is no room, nor need, for two political parties to occupy the broad ‘centre’ of an island nation.
