Very, very sad. I`m quite shocked. The horse clearly did love his racing, I don`t think the question of whether or not he should have been racing aged 11 comes into it. As for the horse himself, well if anyone has a moment, leaf through the racing post today, read the lifetime form comments on any horse you like… then read Persian Punch`s…
"led, pushed along halfway, driven over 4f out, headed over 2f out, rallied in typically gallant fashion to lead again last 100yds, just held on"
For me, that more or less sums it up. A very special horse, R.I.P.

April 28, 2004 at 15:33 #81299very, very sad news indeed
April 28, 2004 at 16:15 #81300Very sad news, one of the bravest horses.
April 28, 2004 at 16:26 #81301Whats the point in carrying on liking horse racing? My favourite horse Jair Du Cochet dies and then the simply brilliant Persian Punch has a heart attack. It’s a cruel game, and I just feel so desperate at the moment. It must be heartbreaking for David Elsworth, his affection for that horse was unmatchable. Truly terrible news.
April 28, 2004 at 17:28 #81302Persian Punch’s run in the 2001 (i think) Jockey Club Cup was one of the most gutsy and brave runs i’ve seen from a racehorse despite the relative ease of the victory. It originally said on ceefax that he’d collapsed in the shadow of the winning post.
There’ll never be another like him.
RIP Persian Punch.

April 28, 2004 at 17:29 #81303I’ll certainly miss him wether he was my favourite racehorse or not, a very brave horse who didn’t know when he was beaten.
R.I.P… Persian Punch :crying:April 28, 2004 at 17:30 #81304Never before has a flat horse been taken to heart by the racing public with such fondness, than in the case of Persian Punch. Truly there will never be another one like him.
He would never have been one of my absolute "all-time favourites", but we all liked him. His Goodwood Cup win last season has been played over and over again by me since the day it happened. More so now.
Goodbye Punchie, you were truly remarkable.
April 28, 2004 at 18:12 #81305I saw him win the Doncaster cup last year. It was brilliant a great big cheer went up from the crowd as he passed the winning post.
He was lovely horse.
April 28, 2004 at 18:23 #81306Feel sick. Brave, gutsty, incredibly tough horse. Gave his all in his races, we should all remember the great times he gave us, whether we backed him or not….that’s irrelevant. Heart goes out to all connected with him…….today one of those days which makes the winning ones seem somewhat hollow. Take care Persian Punch, and thanks for the memories
April 28, 2004 at 18:30 #81307its a very sad irony that with the owner being too scared to ever run him over the jumps and give him a chance to prove himself to be a proper champion he should perish on the flat.
its a big blow to flat racing to lose its biggist star as it slips further behind the jumps in the popularity stakes.
as someone said earlyer thank god we didnt have to witness it on tv.
April 28, 2004 at 18:48 #81308Terrible, terrible news.
I echo the comments made by everyone on here. All mature and sombre.
April 28, 2004 at 18:50 #81309:( :( :(
April 28, 2004 at 18:57 #81310A brilliant, brave old horse and it will be a long time until we see his like again. RIP.
jairducochetfan- I have felt like you do so many times. All you can do is believe that these horses died doing what they were born for, and in the cases of Jair Du Cochet and Persian Punch, what they genuinely seemed to love. The pair of them are probably up there now, galloping round that great racecourse in the sky.
April 28, 2004 at 19:30 #81311Heart goes out to Jeff Smith, David Elsworth, Martin Dwyer and all connected with the great horse.
Very sad day.
April 28, 2004 at 19:36 #81312Very sad news.
RIP Persian Punch.
April 28, 2004 at 19:52 #81313I agree with all the sentiments expressed, it’s terrible news, all connected with the horse must be devastated.
At least he went out doing something he really enjoyed.
He really will be missed.
