“There have been plenty of calls for him to be banned for life (… ) Much more likely is a ban of between one and four days"

July 27, 2006 at 17:30 #74200He’ll get a token punishment as is the way these days  . My guess is 7 days.
July 27, 2006 at 17:57 #74201Why no option for less than 7 days?
Really, this whole thing has been blown out of all proportion – and by people who don’t know what they are talking about in the first place (ie – the American public who see an edited clip on CNN & get on their moral high horse – as is their wont) and if O’Neill gets more than a few days that won’t be fair. It was all something of nothing and the horse will have felt a whole lot more pain from getting a smack with a stick.

If the authorities deem that the incident constituted even a minor "assault" on a horse, I cannot see how a seven days or less punishment is a runner.
A couple of years ago I saw a top jockey give a recalcitrant horse a dig in the chest in the parade ring after a race, so I don’t believe – with the Ahern incident in mind as well – that these incidents are particularly uncommon. The punishment has to be exemplary and between one and four days would be seen as a joke.
July 27, 2006 at 18:26 #74203Well said, SL.
July 27, 2006 at 18:42 #74204I am in total agreement with SL on this issue.
July 27, 2006 at 18:45 #74205Cheers Gus & Chetnole :)
Zilzal, I can’t agree I’m afraid. This offence was of a very minor nature & to ban O’Neill for more than a few days is not only ridiculous, it is pandering to the tree-huggers (who would sooner see the sport banned anyway) and the tabloids who love nothing better than a good story that makes someone look bad. I just hope that the HRA have the bottle to stand up for themselves & the sport in not bowing to such people.
Take the incident of Timmy Murphy throwing his stick at a horse last year – he was given 10 days reduced to 1 day on appeal. I can see similar happening here. ÂÂÂ

July 27, 2006 at 18:59 #74206I’m in disagreement I’d love him banned for life but then again I don’t tolerate idiots or excuses or bleeding hearts.
He won’t get much. If he does get any sort of lengthy ban he’ll appeal and it’ll be halved anyway.
No discipline, no respect, no justice for anything these days.
I know it wasn’t murder but the intent was there, what would’ve happened had the horse kicked him, what would O’Neill have done? He’s obviously not interested in the horses welfare or he wouldn’y have aimed a butt in the first place.
Now racing is in the news AGAIN for the wrong reasons and everyone not into racing that I speak to goes on about it being a disgrace, racing is cruel blah, blah, blah.
Come down on the idiots hard then we might see things improve.
July 27, 2006 at 19:05 #74207Ah, now, as far as I’m concerned the bleeding hearts are the tree-huggers who are bleating on about what an outrage and heinous act of cruelty this was in the first place!!!
C’mon guys – he’s held up his hands to a stupid loss of temper (which if you were handling a dangerously misbehaving horse you’d probably do too) and publicly apologised; the trainer of the horse has no problem with what happened and the horse will hardly have felt a thing! He would have got his backside tanned for such dangerous behaviour in a yard, out of the public eye. Some perspective, please!!
It’s like saying sorry after mugging an old lady, sorry doesn’t make everything right. It’s easy to say sorry anyone can do it.
Sorry, I won’t go on, once you get me on justice and anything to do with it I’m likely to babble on for England.
Will try and resist the temptation you’ll be glad to hear lol.

Also, can you really equate this misdemeanour to mugging an old lady?!

Not really just the only thing I could think of to make my point. It’s been a long day ;)

July 27, 2006 at 19:48 #74212I voted 7 because the option of 3 days wasn’t there.
July 27, 2006 at 19:51 #74213I’d vote for none .. but the option is not there .. !
July 27, 2006 at 20:10 #74214I voted seven, because I think it will be seven.
Americans complaining about mistreatment of racehorses – their version of the sport involving drugging horses up on bute/lasix – is a bit of a chin scratcher to me :scratchchin:
July 27, 2006 at 22:41 #74215He’ll get less than 7
