Why was Gok Wan invited back to present the fashion, he never has anything critical or constructive to say, bring back the BBC and James Sherwood who famously described woman’s hat as resembling Tracey Island.James Sherwood’s show should not be seen as entertainment Triptych.
If a woman has poor self-esteem issues but loves racing so much she braves Royal Ascot; only to be crucified by James Sherwood on TV… She never goes racing at a big meeting again. Constructive criticism is one thing, James Sherwood went too far and had/has no place in a programme like this imo. This picks on the unknowing, it’s not like the woman is asking for a critique as it would be in a fashion programme.
Oh Ginge that was only meant to be tongue in cheek, it’s just that Gok is so patronising and in a way that’s worse.
I would wholeheartedly take the criticism if someone said I had mis-matched my outfit I certainly wouldn’t let it put me off going racing and I’d be pleased they had said. It’s like walking around with a dollop of jam on your chin and nobody tells you and then you get home and see it in the mirror..
Ok I’ll write my lines:-James Sherwood’s show should not be seen as entertainment

JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...June 17, 2015 at 23:30 #1106498I think RUK’s aftertoon coverage has been good, I’ve no complaints. I cannot say the same of Mark Your Card though which I think has been really poor. Boring interviews which even get repeated in the same programme and not good / detailed enough discussion about the big races. Who the hell is interested in an interview with the bloody chef for gods sake? A lot of the time it looks like are just trying to fill the time. I liked Ruby Walsh on Tuesday though, he’s a very knowledgeable man.
I know there is a good and very welcome overseas challenge this year but I think it’s being overplayed a bit with constant references to remind us.
Paul Morrison is boring and whilst I do like Dave Nevison I’m not sure he actually tells us anything of importance in the betting ring.
C4’s coverage I can’t comment on as I think I’d find sticking pins in my eyes a more favourable option than sitting through hours of Harding, Spencer and Fitzgerald irritating the hell out of me. I won’t even start on the fashion stuff.

JacI think you know James Sherwood was at times more critical than “mismatched outfit”. Just because you or I would not be affected; someone with self esteem issues would. Sorry, may be am looking too much in to your comment Triptych. Just struck me that if only people would think of how someone else less confident (or more anxious) than themselves might feel about vicious comments. All some seem concerned about is being entertained. I know someone who became a recluse and it all stemmed from a comment similar to what Mr Sherwood was famous for. Mental health is no joking matter.
As I said, if someone was on a fashion show, invited comments or knew comments were going to be made – then fair enough. But picking out someone from the crowd who hasn’t been asked – and making vicious comments about them on TV – is not on.
Value Is EverythingJune 18, 2015 at 06:34 #1106512Ginger I understand what you are saying about mental health issues and I’m sorry it upset you.
I do understand what you are saying about mental health issues as my own daughter has had her own demons having battled Leukaemia twice as a child and now gets very depressed because her hair did not grow back as thick as she would have liked, she gets by though and we have spent a lot of time on helping her to love herself, she is getting there.
I try to look on the bright side Ginger, and it isn’t always easy but coming onto TRF, the people here is something that I love to do and I enjoy the banter. I would never make a comment to upset anyone, that’s not who I am, I didn’t think that my comment would be taken so seriously and it has made me feel upset that it has struck a chord with you and I apologise for that.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...June 18, 2015 at 08:34 #1106523Not upset at all Triptych, just wanted to explain my opinion. No need for you to apologise for anything, I probably over reacted (can be oh so sharp) and hope your daughter gets all the help she needs.
It’s James F…… Sherwood that gets to me. You wanted his return and I am very much against it, believing the reason for his absence is (as said) vicious comments.
Value Is EverythingJune 18, 2015 at 10:11 #1106534That’s OK Ginger, I don’t really want him back at all and quite honestly wish the whole fashion thing would be calmed down a bit to say just the one slot per programme, but it will be in overdrive today so lets hope we get to see a lot of what we love the most….the horses.
To say something on a positive note about the coverage I loved the intereview with the woman celebrating her 100th birthday she really was Amazing. Enjoy the rest of Ascot Ginger. Probably worked so well because the two interviewers arn’t the usual suspects and all the more wonderful because it took place in the betting ring.
Not seen any fashion this year Jac; I turn over when the fashion starts. It’s what RUK is for.
Indeed, enjoy! (Hugs)

Well done with Trip to Paris yesterday, love that horse, so progressive, and have been following Champs Elysees this year.
That’s what Royal Ascot is all about hats in the air, records being broken (by young and old) and great racing.
