    Was attending my 2nd Epsom Trainers Open Day yesterday and managed to catch up with some yards I couldn’t get to last year and one was Pat Phelans Ermyn Lodge Stud.

    Have to say everyone was made very welcome and the stud was absolutely gorgeous with such a picturesque background, there was plenty of facilities and the horses all very calm after such what was a hectic day.

    The girl in the yard managed to bring the yearlings and their mothers over and allowed the public to feed them! It was a fantastic expierance and couldn’t of imaged being that up close and personal with some very important horses for the yard.

    Pat Phelan is an improving trainer;
    2007 – 1 winner
    2008 – 7 winners
    2009 – 14 winners
    2010 – 11 winners so far

    I will be keeping an eye on his training as I think he’s a really decent trainer and has the facilities to be supported by much bigger owners in the future

    Next year if you haven’t been I’d advise taking the trip down.

    He’s just had a 16/1 winner at Windsor tonight.

    Interesting winner too – Jeff Daniels who owns Roberto Pegasus used to own Ermyn Lodge but sold it a few years ago to Tony Smith for a decent sum. I don’t think he’s had a horse trained there since he sold up, but had plenty in the old days including a horse called Badou who I bought into with previous incumbent Les Montague Hall.

    Roberto Pegasus caught the eye in the paddock, largely due to his size (looked like a chaser) and with both trainer & lass holding onto him at times. Kicked myself for not having even a small interest at the 25/1 available

    You should have come and said hello as I was standing with Ermyn Lodge most of the morning. We also had a winner that afternoon with a two year old, Cocohatchee, at Folkestone.

    I wish I did!, congratulations with Cocohatchee he’s probably been a bit unlucky to run into Cape To Rio, Eucharist and Treasury Devil!.

    Five winners so far in August. Not bad for a small yard.

    If Mr Phelan still has him (I presume he does), I’d love to see what The Big Orse proves capable of if finally sent over fences this autumn (notwithstanding he’ll be rising nine by then).
