December 20, 2010 at 22:42 #333387Only 7 entries, and I can see that becoming 4 or 5 on the day. A very competitive race nonetheless, with Big Zeb and Golden Silver locking horns once again, and the relatively unexposed Captain Cee Bee also in the mix.
Golden Silver has never beaten Big Zeb, and I’ve sided with Big Zeb on all three occasions, yet somethings telling me he’s never faced him at 100%. You can throw out their Cheltenham meeting, because it seems quite clear Golden Silver simply doesn’t like the place. When they met at Fairyhouse it was evident after half a mile that Golden Silver wasn’t really travelling with any zest. At Navan Golden Silver once again ran a funny sort of race, looking well held before storming up the hill to considerably close the gap on Big Zeb. Big Zeb won cosily on both occasions but I’m not convinced we saw the best of Golden Silver. We know Golden Silver produces his A-game round Leopardstown too, with 2 Grade 1 victories there in recent years.
Captain Cee Bee’s the interesting one. Looked all over Sizing Europe at Leopardstown last year before coming down at the last. That area has always been a worry for him, looking unconvincing getting from one side of an obstacle to the other on more than one occassion. What he does have is an engine though. He has an unbelievably high cruising speed as seen in last year’s Bord Na Mona against Sizing Europe. We also know he stays the trip all day and fights like a tiger. He looked beaten at Cheltenham in the Supreme Novices but dug himself out of a hole to out gun none other than reigning Champion Hurdler up the hill.
Captain Cee Bee and Big Zeb are two of my favourite horses in training and I think the Champion Chase is between them. I’d probably side with Captain Cee Bee at the current prices (11/4) over Big Zeb (6/4), and wouldn’t rule out Golden Silver (9/4) at all either.
December 21, 2010 at 01:12 #333408Golden Silver ran a superb time last time out and at the age of 8 could be now at the peak of his career over the next 12 month’s. He fairly toyed with the opposition last time out IMO. Personally i don’t think the Festival suits him but the owner/trainer should consider going for one of the prep races over in England before the Festival. He be very hard to beat in any of those races not at Chelt..
A very lovable horse….would be a joy to own
December 21, 2010 at 01:42 #333411Interesting to hear Townend saying after Fairyhouse that he thinks they’ve been riding Golden Silver wrong when they’ve gone to England. He thinks they made far too much use of him in both the ’09 Arkle and the ’10 Champion Chase.
He looks a different horse held up off a decent clip.

That could be it Imperial. I backed him in the Arkle, and when he once again ran a stinker at Prestbury Park in this years Champion Chase I put it down to the fact that he either doesn’t like to travel or he doesn’t like the course. I hope it is just down to tactics because he could take a hand in the finish on his best form.
December 21, 2010 at 01:56 #333413That’s interesting….
Then he really comes in as a player especially since the fast-ish ground won’t be that much of a negative now.
Might go antepost if he can beat Big Zeb in this

Cracking race in store. Captain Cee Bee sets the standard. Facinating to he how the rest get on in his company

Now is the time to back Captain Cee Bee for the QMCC be too late after he wins this

When I look at this field compared to those that ran in the Tingle Creek it’s clear to me where the best 2 mile chasers are. Master Minded looks as good as ever but overall the best 2 mile chaser are in Ireland IMO.
To be honest I hope either Big Zeb or Captain Cee Bee will pull out and keep it for the Cheltenham showpiece.
If they do both run I’m pretty confident Captain Cee Bee will come out on top. He’s ticks all the right boxes when it comes to a champion 2 miler. If this comes down to a tactical affair I think you’ll find he has a lot more toe than Big Zeb and he certainly has just as high a cruising speed.
Golden Silver was very impressive back in April but with most of the others having had a long season he may well have been flattered by that. Big test for him here but he has an awful lot to make up on Big Zeb who beat him without batting an eyelid last time.
I know he may have need the race but then Big Zeb ran like he too could be doing with it.
December 22, 2010 at 02:04 #333532Golden Silver was impressive at Fairyhouse, but he would have been expected to beat those compfortably. I think he’s just below top level. Big Zeb should win, if he runs up to form as he seems to be more consisntent nowadays. Of course Captain CeeBee could be anything and hasn’t been tried at this level yet.
December 22, 2010 at 17:34 #333614Terrific race in prospect, it is amazing how little respect Big Zeb and by implication the Irish two mile chasers get over here in England. At the moment there is love in of media and Paul Nicholls, with Master Minded rightly lauded, but horses with lots to prove such as Tataniano and now Woolcombe Folly being put up as his biggest dangers.
I don’t know what more Big Zeb could have done when winning the QM last year and you could make an arguement (not a given but an arguement nonetheless) that he has been the best two mile chaser in GB and Ireland for over two years now.
Captain CeeBee is a huge talent and his blood vessel issue the only stain on a terrific cv. I have always thought that Golden Silver only just gets two miles and that it is that factor rather than a dislike of Cheltenham per se that has held him back at the festival.
I find it difficult to split CBB and BZ in the Dial-A-Bet, GS to be 3rd. Big Zeb to retain his crown in March.December 22, 2010 at 20:34 #333629The trouble with Big Zeb come Cheltenham is that it has to be a 40% probability that he makes a race-losing mistake. I know he seems to be jumping better and I did have a saver on him in March but couldn’t be confident of him getting round again. I do like him alot though.
Captain Cee Bee to win next week – or the week after the way it’s going….
December 22, 2010 at 21:05 #333631Thats an interesting percentage GD…why 40% ?
Both MM and BZ have similar F/UR ratios, most of the accidents happening early in their careers. All the really good 2 milers from recent years had plenty of accidents…Moscow, AZ, Master Minded, Big Zeb…seems to go with the territory.
December 22, 2010 at 21:58 #333637It would certainly have been 40% in his first two seasons over fences; fell twice as a novice, then following season fell in the Tied Cottage and Champion Chase (took a pearler with Choc at the tiop of the hill when seemingly going well) and threw away the Punchestown 2 miler at the last when just getting Master Minded’s measure.
I grant you he generally jumped better last season but I’m always going to worry about his jumping especially when he’s a short price.

3 Golden Silver (FR)(166) (WPMullins) – PTownend 11,12

5 J’y Vole (FR)(153) (WPMullins) – 11,07December 28, 2010 at 15:54 #334072I can’t see the pace in the race, may be a false result
December 29, 2010 at 00:20 #334098Presumably Scotsirish is running to provide a good even pace.
With the ground the way it is they wouldn’t want to be going a mad clip anyway. It really is desperate ground.
December 29, 2010 at 01:04 #334103Fresh ground and an another day of drying could make the ground a non-issue but it going to be very tacky tiring ground instead of a sloppy as Puppy Power said on rte today.
