Not happy with the young lads apparently.

    Fair enough.

I’m sure others will debate the merits of the two jockeys until the cows come home, but I think if I had a cracking young jockey for a son, I’d give him every chance I could find.

    Just hope it wasn’t acrimonious.

(Edit: Although I still haven’t quite forgiven young Willy. Grrr.)

This has been coming for a while. Interesting to see how it all turns out.

I feel really very sorry for Paddy.
Despite NTD being one of my favourite trainers he has left his stable jockey in an impossible position.
Putting up your sons for experience etc is okay , but if I was an owner faced with a choice between Sam TD or Brennan , then that would be a no brainer.
    Laughable family loyalty NTD.
Good luck for the future Paddy, you deserve it

Sam is very talented but not yet close to Paddy Brennan’s class.
In the short term this is a big loss for the stable.

The riding arrangements hardly seem to have halted the number of winners for the stable, even though the festival was obviously disappointing,so what can the owners complain about?

Brennan has had links with other yards in any event, so cannot really grumble. The reduction in his share of prize money is not down to Sam Twiston-Davies getting the leg up, more down to the lack of big race winners by the stable.

I think Brennan is a first class jockey, one of the most naturally gifted. However he always strikes me as extremely intense in interviews and perhaps slight over emotional.

Its one thing being driven, but sometimes that can upset people.

Whilst Howard Johnson gets through jockeys at an alarming rate, one does ask why Brennan has now spent a relatively short time at two top stables. Is there a personality issue?

I know NTD is the trainer, but I cannot imagine all the owners would be happy to put up an 18 year old conditional when Brennan was stable jockey unless maybe a degree of attitude had surfaced?

I wonder where Brennan will go next? I suppose one could speculate that Timmy Murphy wont stay riding forever, and perhaps this news maybe the precursor to Brennan stepping into Murphy’s retainer with David Johnson?

I suppose McCoy will hang up his boots one day soon as well, so the job at Jackdaws could be another option for Brennan who is quite close to McCoy judging from the C4 interview with him during the Cheltenham Festival.

    Hmm, interesting stuff!

Never mind DJ’s retained jockey, I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing him down Pond House way!

I think there is a similar scenario developing down there, if you look at all the talented conditionals such as Danny Cook and now Conor O’Farrell and to a lesser extent Farrelly and Frost. All of these jockeys have booted home Cheltenham winners in the last 2 years (the same of which cannot be said for Tom Scu, who is predominately riding the more fancied stable runners!).

It seems to be blinded loyalty that is keeping him in the job and probably the misty eyedness of the old Scu/ Pipe senior combo.

I noticed even on the Pipes website that E Street Boys win a couple of days ago "gave Tom Scudamore a much needed winner", so wondering if the pressure is building already!

Brennan’s arrival at NTD’s yard resulted in a massive upsurge of fortunes in the stable and I think that is what is needed at Pipe’s. Winning Festival handicaps is ok but the stable should be aiming for the Championship Races.

At the moment I’d be choosing O’Farrell and Cook if I was an owner!!

Comes as no surprise to me,and i wish paddy brennan all the luck in his next job, ntd is a fool to think his kids can replace brennan, and if i had horses with him i would seriously think about moving them.

I couldn’t agree more. As nice a fella as Tom Scudamore is, and I realise that I’m talking as an armchair jockey here, I just don’t think he’s good enough to put on stable stars in championship races. If I ever realise my ambition of owning a racehorse I would much prefer to have Danny Cook or Paddy Brennan if I had a horse in the Pipe yard.

Whilst logic would suggest that Tom Scu’s tenure at Pond House has run its course, you do get the impression the long standing bond between the two families will stand in the way of Brennan getting the job there. A few years back, when Johnson’s string was far bigger, you imagine he woud have had last say, but his influence must have diminished considerably.

I guess Scu could head north and join his father at Lucinda Russell’s.

I think taking on a a job for a trainer with two sons who are very keen and ride etc, you’d always know ‘your days of plenty are numbered’ as it were. However, I think Paddy Brennan has been excellent, and is a brilliant horseman, and won’t find it too hard to be snapped up by a yard.

I do rate S T-D as an up and coming jockey, not as someone ready to take on a job like this, esp as the yards not been as good as it has been this season. I personally think that he would be better off going to someone elses yard, where he doesn’t have his parents giving him the benefit of the doubt and a leg up, for a season or two, then come back. Would do him the world of good. Then, if they’ve fallen out with Brennan, give the job to someone young/capable for the two seasons, Coleman/Schofield come to mind. Two seasons later you’ve had good jockeys with a few more years experience than Sam riding the horses, he’s learnt a ton, and you can crack on. This way I can only see that they will regress for a few season, as Sam is not the finished article. Obviously, even McCoy/Walsh get it wrong sometimes, but no matter how talented you are, you still need to refine/work on that, and I don’t think anyone, bar maybe one or two of the Whittakers is refined completely with horses at 18.

I think Paddy is getting out at the right time. NTD doesn’t look like he’s got a lot of quality young horses coming through. Both the stable stars – Khyber Kim and Imperial Commander – were stuffed at Cheltenham (the latter did have valid excuses though). Nevertheless, neither horse is getting any younger.

I think NTD’s yard will struggle as a result of this decision. Although both his sons are talented, they are very raw and are not in the same league as Paddy, particularly when it comes to the big races. If I was an owner with NTD, I wouldn’t be best pleased by these events.

Paddy would probably be better off moving home like Tom Doyle and Davy Condon have done to good effect in recent seasons. He’d be perfect for someone like Paul Nolan who could be on the lookout for a new retained rider if recent jockey bookings are anything to go by.

    I can’t say I blame him, although I don’t think it’s anyone’s "fault".

It’s one of the sport’s strengths that amateurs and inexperienced riders can get the chance to compoete at the highest level alongside the McCoys, Walshes and Johnsons, as we saw in the Gold Cup, but it can lead to top riders losing out as well.

Just one of those things, I’m afraid.

I like the TD family and Paddy but I thought it was little insensitive during a interview with C4 racing in the Fesstival week for Nigel to say in answer to a question about the boys ability to ride big winners that its much better having one of the boys up anyway becasuse it keeps all the prize money in the family.

Writing was on the wall then.

I’m gutted for Paddy Brennan who I rate as one of the best, but as others have said, writing has been on the wall for a while.

I’m sure Paddy will get a top draw posting. I did even wonder if, much as the arrangement with Ruby has been a great success, Paul Nicholls (and more significantly, his owners) would see the benefit of having a top jock who was 100% committed to his runners.

Brennan was interviewed by ATR earlier. Said he’s still going to be riding out for NTD a couple of days a week & will still be on board Imperial Commander & Khyber Kim for future appointments.
