Am I right in thinking he’s retired from race-riding? In which case, what is he doing these days, please?.
Thanks
KJanuary 19, 2010 at 21:09 #270928As far as I know he is still riding but it would appear that he avoids the winter all-weather season.
January 19, 2010 at 21:27 #270932…and who can blame him?
Thanks Rob
KJanuary 19, 2010 at 21:51 #270939Seem to remember somebody mentioning he was recovering from a recent operation. Up there with Frankie, Richard Hills and Ryan Moore as one of the finest exponents of judging pace from the front imo.
January 19, 2010 at 22:31 #270949A master in his pomp, but last season was already one too many. Don’t know whether it’s Jarvis’ training techniques or a succession of hs injuries catching up with him, but on so many occasions last year he looked to get run away with and then look desperately weak in a finish.
January 20, 2010 at 09:45 #271001Neil Callan has been riding most of Jarvis’ horses since the Autumn in PR’s absence.

Couldn’t agree more.
January 20, 2010 at 16:14 #271099It’s ruined one of my favourite early-season punting strategies rory, just lump on the seemingly poor value Jarvis 3-y-o handicap debutant and then watch it make all.
January 20, 2010 at 23:48 #271195Looking through Robinson’s formbook comments for 2009 he went to the front on 61 occasions and won 20 times when he did so. Strike rate of over 30% and a level stakes profit of almost 50% at actual BFSP. 15 of those winners were for Jarvis. His best year strike-rate wise since my records begin at 2000. Still one of the very best from the front in my opinion.

January 21, 2010 at 12:00 #271238Well you can cherry pick all you like DJ, but the big picture figures for 2009 do not bear out your assertion that “last season was already one too many”.
Simply not the case. I repeat, overall last year strike-rate wise when going from the front, was his best in the last 10 years.
I see your making inroads into the racing media, DJ. Please don’t go down the path of lazy analysis that is the hallmark of plenty in that profession.

I’m sure we’ve had this debate regarding the very same rider before, and I’m pretty sure our viewpoints remain as they once were. Agreed it was a cheapshot to single out one particular ride, and I’m not going to disagree with your figures. But I can assure you my views on Robinson’s capabilities as a rider these days are based on watching the vast majority of his rides closely.
January 21, 2010 at 17:55 #271282Fair enough DJ, we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one. If your on the radio any day he dots up I’ll send a barrage of "Have That!!" email’s to the studio.
January 21, 2010 at 18:49 #271290Look forward to it.
January 22, 2010 at 18:12 #271475He is recovering from a operation to one of his hips, which I think he had at the end of November.. (I used to work with his sister-in-law at M. Jarvis’s)
He won’t be back until the turf season in March
May 19, 2010 at 11:32 #296223Good start to the season for Mr Robinson, with a strike rate of over 30% so far, 40% on front runners
. His critics will be seething
having missed the 40+ points profit at BFSP.

Great stuff Philip.
