There is no escape for poor old Liz:
November 2, 2022 at 16:57 #1621339As appalling as I thought Truss was, there’s something about burning an effigy of a living person that feels wrong to me. And I’d make the same comment re previous undesirables selected for this event such as Anne Robinson and Russell Brand. I don’t think the fact it’s a “charity event” makes any difference; it’s tasteless and demeans the causes it seeks to raise money for.
November 2, 2022 at 17:38 #1621346The same thing happens at Lewes during their Bonfire event.
November 2, 2022 at 18:55 #1621356Nothing like burning catholics to put everyone in a party mood
November 2, 2022 at 19:20 #1621358A group of Protestants were burned in Lewes during Queen Mary’s reign.
November 2, 2022 at 19:46 #1621361And why stop at Bonfire Night? They could do a mock crucifixion at Easter too! It’s all for charity, after all.
November 2, 2022 at 20:01 #1621363Mock? There should be a real crucifixion of someone who thinks they’re God.
Elon Musk would do nicely.
November 2, 2022 at 20:21 #1621366Whatever raises the most money, Gladiateur! That’s what counts.
November 2, 2022 at 20:26 #1621367I’m sure millions of people would fork out to watch Musk meet his grisly end.
It could even be on Pay Per View. Ker-ching!
November 2, 2022 at 21:06 #1621403“There should be a real crucifixion of someone who thinks they’re God.”
Not liking the sound of this!
“Elon Musk would do nicely.”
Phew!
Chezza thought he was in trouble there for a minute!
What a way to spend Easter!

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 8, 2024 at 14:49 #1701248In good news: Ladbrokes have finally settled my bet on Liz Truss not being Conservative Party leader at the General Election.
I had to email them to ask why it had not been settled. I recieved a reply full of talk like “Hi, thanks for reaching out to us” etc but they got there in the end.
I was hoping to have a few drinks on Liz on election night but I suppose it will have to wait.
July 8, 2024 at 17:51 #1701271Probably had to check you weren’t a Tory acting on inside info 😉
July 8, 2024 at 18:22 #1701275I have no idea why it took so long to settle. It should have been as soon as the polls closed.
The email said they were waiting for all the results to come in but I don’t see why the late result from Inverness (which did not declare until Saturday afternoon) should have made any difference.
July 8, 2024 at 19:10 #1701280Waiting until all the results are in is probably just company policy for all such events, regardless of circumstances. No problem with that myself.
Anyway, you at least had a return, unlike me
July 8, 2024 at 19:23 #1701282I agree but it was not settled until this afternoon, over 2 days after the close of the event. Bets on a huge volume event like the Grand National are settled far quicker.
I am not sure it would have been settled without my email but at least it has been done now.
