Btw, that Reggie Perrin clip is pure hilarious genius and, I’d originally planned to say ahead of its time, but the reality is it’s TIMELESS.

Why is she still here? All comes back to FPTP. As things are, you need quite a lot of Tory MPs to vote themselves out of job to win a no confidence vote. As it should be there would be a majority of non-Tory MPs and it would be a racing certainty.

Of course they should in theory act in the best interests of their constituents and not themselves but that’ll never happen.

She was voted in as PM by 0.2% of the electorate, apparently even most of them want her gone now, and she’s still here.

PMQs today promises to hit new lows in terms of “excruciating.”

Popcorn at the ready. 10% inflation, the 1922 Committee’s postbox overflowing with no confidence letters, even the membership has turned on her and to top it all off she’s now going after the pensioners. Starmer should be scoring like Erling Haaland playing against a Sunday League team.

You could almost feel sorry for her but there’s only one place to look for blame, and they sure as hell don’t feel sorry for those who suffer as a result of their incompetence so give it both barrels Starmer.

Truss is obviously in for a difficult time in about 40 minutes but if she survives without too much of a humiliation, I have a feeling she may limp on for a while.

I am not sure the Conservatives have an agreed plan in place to remove her and who should take over. They are probably also aware of the “optics” of her being the shortest serving Prime Minister.

There is also the issue of another General Election. Strictly speaking it is not required if the new Prime Minister can form a government, command a majority and win a confidence vote. However, the calls for an election would be difficult to resist politically and morally. And I doubt many Conservative MPs are relishing the prospect.

If however she has a dismal PMQs even by her standards, she has probably had it.

Bad move by Starmer to start with a lame joke. He just is not funny and should stick to facts.

Yes, the need for a boring, humourless PM at the present time cannot be overstated.

Starmer spent/wasted the entire PMQs mocking her – she’s already a national figure of fun, he’s no comedian and by focussing on mockery at the expense of the real-life consequences for the electorate of her catastrophic policies then policy u-turns in recent weeks he kinda let her off the hook, or at least failed to press hold his advantage.

That said, she cut the poorest figure in history for a Tory PM and any Tory must have found that pretty excruciating.

Agree about Starmer. It was not appropriate to start with a joke. He got a bit better bit he failed to land any sort of telling blow.

Truss did OK. Better than expected but expectations were quite low. Having said that, her MPs did not exactly cheer her every word.

The worst performance was, as usual, by Blackford. After attacking Truss over the Triple Lock, she confirmed it would be retained. He must be either deaf, stupid or incapable of deviating from a script because he continued shouting as if the Triple Lock was being abolished, which gifted Truss any easy put down.

I think she is almost certainly safe now until the financial statement at the end of the month. She may even survive to the local elections when lots of Conservative held councils are up for grabs.

Edit – wrote all the above without realising Braverman had been sacked. It is some achievement for an incoming Prime Minister to lose two of the three main Cabinet ministers in their first six weeks.

Same, CAS, it’s just happened and the reasons exactly why are still unclear.

Something about her accidentally breaching security and it being an automatic resigning matter, but there may be more to it.

Braverman was already unhappy about Truss caving in to the centre of the Party and public opinion – Truss was unhappy that Braverman seemed to be even more right wing than her!

Braverman is a truly awful, vile individual who doesn’t belong in Parliament, never mind the Cabinet. Good riddance.

From her ‘dreams’ of sending desperate human beings to Rwanda to her pathetic ‘wokerati’ line yesterday she shouldn’t be anywhere near a position of power.

    From Braverman’s resignation statement:

“The business of government relies upon people accepting responsibility for their mistakes. Pretending we haven’t made mistakes, carrying on as if everyone can’t see we have made them, and hoping that things will magically come right is not serious politics. I have made a mistake; I accept responsibility; I resign.”

Forget what I said earlier, I am starting to wonder if Truss will still be Prime Minister tonight.

For anyone who hasn’t seen Braverman’s resignation letter:

What’s most concerning is the fourth paragraph. It appears that this government isn’t right wing enough for her.

So, the return to Labour Lite is almost complete.
Flock knows who i can vote for at next GE?
Braverman obs made a cock-up but i can see where she’s going re the ‘other’ paragraphs.
Shame about her; her dept sent 11 Albanians straight home the other day, as they were ‘false’ asylum seekers. Nice to see someone doing her job properly.
Schapps rumoured to be replacing her. Jeez, a lurch towards the Euro/Labour Lite.
The in-fighting in the Tory party wont stop here, for sure.

If the Tories are too moderate then don’t worry, I’m sure Farage will put up one of his REFUK troops. That’s if they aren’t too busy standing on a beach in Kent angrily pointing at things.

It has now become so comical that Shapps, who was sacked just six weeks ago when Truss was trying to show she was in charge, has now been brought back into the Cabinet at a more senior grade.

As for Braverman’s departure, I expect a liberal like Hunt was not sorry to see her go. However, I have no sympathy for her if she genuinely has broken security rules. Any civil servant who does so is on a gross misconduct charge and faces almost certain dismissal.

Truss is probably hoping Braverman’s statement might backfire as the parting shot of a bitter loser.

The vote on fracking tonight is now important. Three Conservative MPs have already tweeted they will vote against the government. If plenty more do, Truss could be in trouble.

A complete mess, we’re getting beyond a change of leader at this stage. Time for Labour and I say that as someone who had never voted for them.
