Was thinking the other day of Race names/titles i remember from when i first got into racing ,a few i remember:Joan Mckay chase , Mercedes Benz Chase,Kirk and Kirk,Mackeson,Massey-Ferguson,Stones Ginger Wine,Geoffrey Gilbey memorial,Embassy premier chase series,Schweppes Hurdle,Ladbroke hurdle (ireland) ,Black and White whiskey gold cup ,SGB chase.
I’m sure there is more to be added.for those with long memories, the titles didn’t seem to change for years or so it seemed .
December 20, 2013 at 20:16 #462441Ah yes – those bring back many memorories. Here are a few flat races that may ring bells:-
SKF Cesarewitch (One has to wonder what sponsoring this race did for the ball-bearing industry)
Observer Gold Cup
Vernons SprintDecember 20, 2013 at 22:56 #462471Whitbread Gold Cup
December 20, 2013 at 23:25 #462484The Schweppes – the big mile race at Goodwood
December 20, 2013 at 23:29 #462485The Benson and Hedges – now the Juddmonte International at York
There used to be a lot of cigarette sponsorship !

December 21, 2013 at 09:00 #462526Hi,
I seem to remember the following race titles:
Andy Capp Handicap – Redcar
Ainsley China Cup – Chepstow
Philip Cornes Nickel Alloys Series
Mildmay Cazelet Chase – SandownDecember 21, 2013 at 09:34 #462531Hi,
I seem to remember the following race titles:
Andy Capp Handicap – Redcar
Ainsley China Cup – ChepstowPhilip Cornes Nickel Alloys Series
Mildmay Cazelet Chase – Sandown
You sort of beat me to it, I was remembering the overly-grand sounding
Philip Cornes Saddle of Gold
series which was a number of races for staying hurdlers over 3m. Probably wouldn’t be the interest in staying to sustain such events nowadays.
I remember the Final being at Chepstow one year but I think it was moved around between courses.
Philip Cornes are still going but sadly they seemed to have knocked racing sponsorship on the head.

What a picture, what a photograph
December 24, 2013 at 09:29 #462845Just to take this thread on a tangent – I have noticed that for many years famous horses such as Arkle, Persian War, Red Rum, Reynoldstown and now Kauto Star all have races named after them but they are all novice races rather than top handicaps or graded races such as the Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle etc.
Is this a deliberate policy by the authorities? I would have thought that if a horse has been historically linked to a race then that particular race could be named in their honour. For example, Arkle wins three Gold Cups at 3m 2f but the Festival race named after him is a Novice’s chase over 2m – surely the RSA Chase (3m 1f) would be a more fitting tribute if not the Gold Cup itself.
I don’t follow American racing as such but I notice that they seem to name their top races after their best horses such as Man O’ War, Preakness etc.
December 24, 2013 at 12:22 #462852Arkle also won the old RSA, or Broadway Chase as it was then.
What was it about the festival in 2000 which contributed to so many track records ? Was there a particular wind directon or lack of wind ? I remember 06 being quite mild with quickish ground but only Detroit City hold a record from that year.
December 24, 2013 at 17:14 #462888Years ago a lot of jumps races were sponsored by Edinburgh Woollen Mill…….I guess they probably made the tweed clothing that racing folk were fond of

They owned a lot of horses, too.
One of my favourite races was the H & T Walker Gold Cup, which is now the Amlin 1965 Chase. It used to be a limited handicap for second season chasers and some very good ones won it, too; I recall one vintage edition in which Very Promising slammed Buck House. It’s a shame that the race is now an open Grade One, instead of the natural target for those just out of novice status which it once was.
December 25, 2013 at 18:00 #462913Edinburgh Woollen Mill is owned by Ashleybank Investments, who also sponsor many races; and this entity is owned by Raymond Anderson-Green, a leading owner in the north
Coincidentally, Mr Anderson-Green was kind enough to drop a rather fetching red tartan cashmere scarf down the chimney last night
December 25, 2013 at 22:49 #462923Edinburgh Woolen Mill were right into jumpers
SGB Chase
In my ignorance, I used to think that Victor Ludorum bloke got great value for four grand prize money
December 25, 2013 at 23:32 #462932Didn’t they used to have the radio on in the factories when the horses were running
days. Sounds almost Dickensian now.
