I seem to recall Jessie having a horse at Cheltenham one year called Space something or other; was the horse that knocked Jamie Osbornes teeth out [not at Cheltenham I don’t think, but a later race]. And seeing her at Punchestown when Moscow Flyer was running there. Punchestown very unfathomable betting wise. What struck me was how [unlike here]everyone in Ireland seemed to be interested in racing but that they didn’t seem to be as sentimental about horses as we are here. There was a really good series about Jessies yard on the run up to Cheltenham which I missed at the time; wonder if it’s on utube?I have such memories of the Festival; Istabraq; Best Mate;Grey Abbey; Iris’s Gift; Chief Dan George and now Labaik and Jack’s mum. Good festival or bad you’re still watching history being made when you’re there and are part of it so the magic has to rub off on you.
March 19, 2017 at 23:22 #1293590You’re thinking of Space Trucker moe, who won The Grand Annual in the late 90’s.
Yeah, Punchestown is a different kettle of fish to Cheltehnam, but I love it, and it seems never ending lol. I’m shattered by the end of it, and it’s always a good time to bring down the curtain on my season, as May is the perfect time to take a break. Looking forward to it, but still got The Lincoln, Aintree, Ayr, Perth, and Sandown to go first

Yeah, great memories again this year moe, my own personal favourites would be Tiger Roll, and Cause of Causes, but so many others to choose from. Labaik would have been one of those highlights as well, and yes his mum was pleased haha. I’ve not watched it yet, but will make a point of doing so later, but there’s footage of Lisa O’Neils parents going mental as she wins on Tiger Roll. I think it’s on Youtube, and a few of the Racing Pages on Facebook.
March 20, 2017 at 12:35 #1293616Have finally got my catchup tv to work so I’m now rewatching the whole of the festival; the good thing about being on the computer most of last week is that I’m watching most of it for the first time and trying to pick out the hard luck stories/staying on horses etc. What is annoying is that, had I been watching at the time I would have backed both Supasundae and Tiger Roll as Brian Gleeson was very positive about both of them. And I’m finding the interviews with Martin Pipe fascinating, as I’d just got back into racing at the time when Pipe was being vilified by the inner sanctum of the racing world.
March 20, 2017 at 12:54 #1293618Bob how things mate and any views on Cheltenham 2018 i put up a few ante post bets already any views on them
March 20, 2017 at 19:45 #1293655Hi Darren,
all good mate, best Cheltenham ever for me, as I said a few posts back, y some stretch, and trying to keep my money in my pocket for now, though, have a few I bet in January who I’m currently trying to top up on.
I’ll pop over to the thread tonight.
March 22, 2017 at 12:20 #1293776Mitchell riding this afternoon. Not so good in bumpers/hurdles but has an amazing strike rate in chases. Interesting to see how he does. Horse well fancied…
March 22, 2017 at 13:36 #1293789SAROQUE my only bet at Haydock any views mate
March 22, 2017 at 14:34 #1293798No bets today Darren, though obviously the Saroque race was the one that appealed to me the most. If I was having a punt it would be on Sunny Ledgend, but as I’m not I’ll be shouting on Saroque for you……good luck
March 22, 2017 at 20:27 #1293828I never seem to get Rose Dobbins horses right. Or Sandy Thompsons. No prizes for guessing which one I didn’t back today [grrrr]…Not sure if Mitchell is a good young jockey or if he rides for a trainer that is very good at using his 10lb claim to advantage. Either way, I fear the cat is out of the bag now and the price won’t be there [grrr again…]
March 22, 2017 at 23:37 #1293838I’ve had some good days from Sandy Thomson horses Moe, and not just my old pal Seeyouatmidnight. I’m maybe looking at this through rose tinted specs, but I get the impression I’ve had more winners from him at Kelso than anywhere else. I know you go to Kelso now and then, so I hope you get a winner now from him the next time you’re there.
March 23, 2017 at 22:53 #1293906We’re there in a couple of weeks time. Always chat to the first aid guy at the last fence and catch up with all the gossip! And hope to bump into Adams dad to find out about his intended rides. Once went in search of Rose Dobbins yard when it was first opened, but it was a bit like Fort Knoxx. Must make a point of looking for Sandy’s yard; round Coldstream way I think.
March 26, 2017 at 12:39 #1294207Well done with Bodega yesterday Bobby and a great nap in the select 3 horses competition (just updated).
You’ll soon be putting your feet up for a well deserved rest but first just the small matter of Aintree and the Grand National to sort out..good luck.
Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...March 28, 2017 at 14:48 #1294405One horse was really interfered with by the loose horse and dropped back very quickly [not sure which one it was].Having said that, the unpronounceableone, who was wearing huge cheekpices, so one would have questioned it’s resolve, suffered interference throughout the race and ran on gamely. I did back it, as I’d backed it at Cheltenham and I’m sure there was money going on it prior to that race.
April 5, 2017 at 00:30 #1295303Biggest weekend of the year approaching, so time to take a stock of my Ante-Post position.
Well, after a great Cheltenham Ante-Post, where I had 5 or 6 Green Books, as per, The National has been somewhat trickier. Definitely a loser at the moment, and although I could go green at the click of a button from More of That, I have no intention of doing so, so stuck with a losing book. Been hit with more sore losers than usual this year, and the news about Ziga Boy was not good for me.
As I said last week, this approach didn’t do me any harm last year, letting the book run, and I just hope lightning can strike twice.
Cause of Causes 40’s
The Young Master 33’s
Bless The Wings 6 places ew 100’s
Bless The Wings 5 places ew NRNB 66’sMore of That 550’s to 1000’s
Doctor Harper 1000’s
Pleasant Company 360’s to 380’s
Ballynagour 100’s to 110’sJust A Par 130’s Laid 55’s
Wounded Warrior 120’sGoodtoknow 110’s
O’Faolains Boy 70’s Laid 30’s
Potters Cross 1000’s
The Crafty Butcher 380’s to 1000’sIt looks a below par National this year, so I’ll be very disappointed if Cause of Causes can’t go close. He was first horse bet for it, almost a year ago, and I have him on too many lines to mention. I’ll be delighted if he wins it, love the horse to bits, and I think he can.
More of That and Doctor Harper would be massive winners for me, while Ballynagour and Bless The Wings wouldn’t be unwelcome either.
The rest are much of a muchness, but would all put me profit, so won’t complain with them either.
Too late to look at other Aintree races Ante-Post, so I’ll have a look once final decs are known each day.
Looking ahead to Fairyhouse, and I’m still very very keen on General Principle at 40’s, and I’m also with Lord Scoundrel and Fletchers Flyer at 25’s, while I’m with Shutthefrontdoor at decent odds on the exchanges. The race has a stellar set of entries this year, and I hope they get a final field that matches it.
Further ahead to Ayr, and still hoping to see a big run from Seeyouatmidnight, and hoping that Minella Daddy gets an entry, while I’ve no idea if he’s even fit, but I just wonder if we’ll see Double Ross in the line up?
April 5, 2017 at 13:28 #1295336A few thoughts on tomorrow as I won’t have access tomorrow morning.
It won’t take too long as from a punting angle it is very disappointing.
The biggest disappointment of the week is the absence of Road To Respect in the opener. I hope they are not going three miles because his best so far is definitely over shorter. At around 5-6/1 he would have been the one to beat. Cloudy Dream is better than Top Notch but over this trip? Defi Du Seuil shouldn’t come out of second gear. I am not going to be lured into backing Empire Of Dirt. He wins this on Irish Gold Cup form but he was 20lbs below that level at the Festival. Why should tomorrow be any different? I think they should have missed the Irish Gold Cup and gone Ryanair and Punchestown Gold Cup. To me not giving him the break will probably mean the difference between two Grade 1’s and nothing. As I said I hope I am wrong but I think we are talking botched campaign. Buveur D’Air is probably better over shorter but it will be a surprise if any of these get him off the bridle. It was sad to see the demise of On The Fringe and consequently the standard of this season’s hunter chasers is very poor.
The last two races provide the only realistic betting options and even then there isn’t that much value in the markets. They are going to go a million miles in the two mile handicap and it is probably a question of who jumps well enough to pick up the pieces. Dandridge and Double Ws would seem the two most likely candidates. It isn’t a great renewal of the mare’s bumper but Petticoat Tails looks the right favourite although her previous runs would suggest she will find herself outpaced at some stage. I have had a little each-way on Dame Rose and Maria’s Benefit. The way things have been going they will probably finish fourth and fifth!
Good luck if you have a dabble.
I ended up adding The Last Samuri to One For Arthur and Highland Lodge and that’s me finished.
April 5, 2017 at 23:35 #1295420I’m not too concerned about the lack of punting opportunities, it’s probably a good thing for me. Last year was a stormer for me at Aintree, especially the Saturday, but the general rule is that I’ll lose, and I’m sure I used up my luck at Cheltenham.
Yeah, got to agree with that, I was looking forward to seeing him too, though I’m fairly open minded as to whether he’ll need a trip, Either way, he looks a nice prospect, and it’s a shame he’s not there. I’ll have a small interest in Flying Angel at around the 15-2 mark. I doubt he’d have troubled Yorkhill, but he certainly had no luck at Cheltenham, and if he got the run of the race, he’d be a bit shorter tomorrow. I reckon there’s bit of juice in that price.
“Botched Campaign” would sum it up nicely for Empire I reckon, though I will take some satisfaction should he score tomorrow. I’ve joined you though in swerving him, and I’m on Smad Place each way at 20’s, and very hopeful he can finish in the 3.
In the Juvenile Hurdle, Defi Du Seuil will be hard to beat, and I’ll have no complaints if he wins, it’s always nice to see a future star, but take him on I will. In all the excitement of Cause of Causes winning The Cross Country, I’ve overlooked just how big a winner Flying Tiger was for me in The Fred Winter. He easily makes my top ten biggest winners ever, and having watched it back a couple of times, he did really well to get there, having to weave a path, and he might just be a bit better than he’s getting credit for. A straight win bet for me on him, and I’ll take whatever price he is on the exchanges. He’s not the main bet though, as I’m quite keen on Forth Bridge. Quite taken with him at Musselburgh, and although I missed the 20’s, I managed to get a bit of the 16’s each way. In reality, Defi should win easily, but happy to have those 2 on my side.
In The Aintree Hurdle, I’m strangely confident about Rashaan. I think he’ll surprise a few people here up in trip, and being on him Ante-Post at 40’s each way, I’ll actually be disappointed if I don’t get the place money at the very least.
I see The Foxhunter a bit different tomorrow, and after a few years where I reckon the line ups were pretty dismal, I’m actually looking forward to it. No serious bet in it though, as there’s a few I like, not least Pacha Du Polder who did the business for me at Cheltenham. I’m more interested in On The Fringe getting round safely, as I need Jamie Codd to be fit for Cause of Causes on Saturday. I’ll chance Sam Cavallaro at the ridiculous odds of 200-1, as he’s not a complete no-hoper, and you don’t have to go mad at those kind of odds each way.
I agree about the 1640, and it’s the best betting heat of the day. I’m on two of them Ante-Post. I’ve been banging the drum about Theinval on here for a couple of years now, and he was a rare highlight of the 2015 Meeting here, when he won easily at very nice odds. I’ve always liked him over fences too, and I don’t think we’ve seen the best of him yet. He ran a cracker in The Grand Annual, and it’s very rarely I bet 7-1 shots, never mind 7-1 shots Ante-Post, but he’s a strong fancy. I’ve also went for Yorkist, as he’s been a “notebook” horse of mine for a while now. Some nice recent runs to give him a live chance here, and I couldn’t resist the 20’s on offer Ante-Post, and had a go each way. A really strong race, and I could make a good case for most of them. Parsnip Pete will make the exactas at the very least.
I’m taking a chance on Drops of Jupitor in the last. Won last time, and in the right kind of hands for this sphere. Hood is on, and top jock booked in the shape of Noel Fehily. I’m on at 33’s, and plan to top up tomorrow.
Good luck tomorrow, and let’s hope we can have a couple of winners between us, but given my record at this meeting, I can’t guarantee I’ll manage it.
April 5, 2017 at 23:49 #1295423I think you are going have much more chance of that winner than I am. I doubt I will add to the two in the bumper.
Didn’t realise you were on Flying Tiger. You probably won’t be surprised to know I was on Nietzsche (28/1) who bungled the last and Dino Velvet who was never put in the race.
The quicker the ground the better for Rashaan. I would have preferred him over shorter but if he stays he has a chance of beating some of the more exposed types.
