With reference to Brian Harding he may have been a loyal servant but he has never been a top-class jockey and he is unlikely to suddenly reach that level now.
May 14, 2008 at 18:27 #1634803 Jocks in with a chance for me are.
James Reveley and Fearghal Davis, decent young lads and in with a chance.
For me though if i was Nicky id try and get Liam Heard as Ruby and Sam are holding the fort well at Ditcheat he may find it tricky but he is a capable rider with a Becher Chase to his name and may be ideal
May 14, 2008 at 18:27 #163481Immediately after Tony Dobbin’s retirement, Richards said he had no problem with using Fearghal Davis for the time being IIRC. At the moment it appears to be a split between him and Harding getting the rides from Greystoke, with of course the occasional appearance from Rose Davidson riding for Daddy!
Personally, I think he’ll have a hard time getting a decent (i.e.top-bracket Northern) jockey for his next stable job. With the aforementioned Miss Davidson getting her own license, Duncan Davidson’s horses are sure to follow and the Richards string will suffer as a result (admittedly in terms of quantity rather than quality). The obvious candidate without a stable job already would be Wilson Renwick, but he seems to have his fingers in a couple of decent pies already, given his gentlemen’s agreement with Len Lungo and the handy spare rides he often picks up from Peter Monteith and Howard Johnson.
May 14, 2008 at 18:27 #163482I’m broadly in agreement with Stilvi here – no fault of his own, of course, but I think Harding would appear an unimaginative signing from the outside looking in.
Fearghal Davis would appear to be better positioned than most to assume the role, though a move for Brian Hughes wouldn’t surprise me, either.

Adoptive father of two. The patron saint of lower-grade fare. A gently critical friend of point-to-pointing. Kindness is a political act.
May 14, 2008 at 19:55 #163497Give it a couple of days and i bet that there could be an annoucement a maybe a bit of a surprise.
PS im ruling myself out, because im no longer ‘a young lad’
May 18, 2008 at 11:30 #164156Personally I hope Brian Harding gets the nod, if only because he was good enough to invite me along to Greystoke for a stable tour and to watch the horses gallop where I got to meet Nicky Richards, and also horses like Monet’s Garden, Faasel and Premier Dane. Also accompanied Brian to Newcastle races that day (Eider day) and got an all access badge, and had a tour of the weighing room, and had a couple of beers after with some of the jocks e..g Richie McGrath.
Also, has been a good servant to the yard and that may count for something with Mr Richards.
May 21, 2008 at 08:00 #164623Condon rides Premier Dane for Nicky Richards at Sedgefield tonight. It’s most certainly an interesting booking, and is bound to raise suspicion that he is the next #1 at Greystoke, especially with Fearghal Davies having a book of six rides today between Kelso & Sedgefield (not one for Richards).
However I’m not sure if moving from being Mullins’ #2 (with Ruby often absent riding for Paul Nicholls) to being Richards’ top man is a forward step. The job O’Regan got with Howard Johnson meant he would get the backing of a big owner who’s not afraid to open the chequebook, and thus get to ride a lot of classy/well-bred horses. I just don’t see where that’s going to come from at Nicky Richards’.May 21, 2008 at 08:42 #164632Condon confirmed in todays post, Harding to remain as second
