Hi everyone,
Long time observer, first time contributer here. Just a quick question for ye hardened racegoers. I’m going to Newmarket on Saturday and will be driving up from Luton in the morning. Anybody have any useful hints/warnings/info about traffic in the town or around the racecourse? It’s my first time going there so there may well be obvious things I’m not aware of, but that ye may be able to pass on.
Thanks,
KieranOctober 15, 2009 at 23:06 #253519hi Kieran,
I’m sorry you have had no response so far, there are usually a few informative people from the Newmarket area on this forum and it is nice to see you here in any case and hope that you will write more in future.
I cannot advise you too much regarding the traffic situation as I only go to Newmarket for the work watching on occasions, so I’m just bumping this topic up for you in the hope you get a response more to your liking.
In any case, I do hope you have an enjoyable day and perhaps you would let us all know how you got on, when convenient.
bi for now

the later you leave the longer it takes
October 15, 2009 at 23:29 #253524Hi Kieran, welcome to the forum. I’ve no idea about the traffic but just wanted to welcome you!
October 15, 2009 at 23:32 #253525Should be an easy drive in from Luton as the Baldock by-pass is such a boon.
Would normally take about an hour but traffic will be heavy when you get to Newmarket and nothing you can really do about it.
You’ll come in through Six Mile Bottom and then hit the town at the National Stud roundabout near the July Course – with the statue of a rearing horse.
Once round that you’ll just go up the driver between the courses and when you get to town turn left into the racecourse and free parking is available on the gallops – all well signposted and heaving.
Arrive as early as you can for the best trip in. Of course if you really want to make a day of it you could get here by 9am and go and watch horses working up Long Hill/Warren Hill but probably not the best day for that as so busy on Champions Day.
The crowd won’t be anything like as busy though as for a Friday night at the July Course so you may be pleasantly surprised
October 17, 2009 at 01:16 #253727Thanks for the welcome, and particularly for the traffic advice Adrian. Looking forward to it. Hopefully Chabal will pay for my night out in Cambridge!
October 17, 2009 at 04:25 #253766Hi. Just make sure you do not miss the racecourse on your left and end up driving into town. It can be a nightmare turning round.
My first post BTW. Hello everyone.
