the horrific energy prices will simply mean many people esp pensioners won’t be able to put there heating on

A very tough winter beckons for many but taken as a cohort of the public overall pensioners will find it less tough thanks to the ‘triple lock’ which more or less guarantees that the state pension rises in line with inflation. The ‘working poor’ and the ‘just about managings’ are the (large) cohort who’ll find it toughest, as their wages/salaries are declining sharply in real terms

It should also be noted that a significant number of pensioners are in receipt of generous employment and private pensions accumulated over the decades before this country degenerated into a low-wage economy dependent upon vast amounts of cheap credit (personal debt) to function

So despite the fact that I’ll offically become an OAP in December, becoming eligible to claim the state pension, I won’t be joining many of my fellow oldsters in bemoaning our lot

We Boomers never had it so good

The Hall was saved in 1969 when Bill Cash – then a 30 year old lawyer in London with a young family – noticed Upton Cressett on the endangered buildings list of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB). Bill and his wife Biddy drove up to Shropshire to look at the romantic sounding Elizabethan manor.

When they arrived they found the Hall was a ruin with farm animals in the entrance hall along with farm machinery. There were no locks on any of the doors: once you had battled through the overgrowth and brambles, you just walked in.But despite the wild pigs, out-of-control ivy, broken windows, and a large tree growing up the staircase of The Gatehouse, Bill and Biddy Cash immediately fell in love with Upton Cressett. Renovation work began in 1971. In the preface to his history of the Cressett family, Bill Cash recalls that sultry and muggy day in August 1969 that he and Biddy first glimpsed the Hall, after driving up from Somerset in their old white Citroen Safari:

The atmosphere was magical, heavy with the humming of bees. We walked, with mounting excitement, through high grass surrounding the ancient, derelict buildings with tumbled down chimneys and trees growing through the brickwork, faintly discerning the outline of the moat by the Norman church. The air of romantic dereliction was permeated by a surge of ancient emotions. It has never lost its medieval character.

2016 will mark the 45th anniversary of the Cash family living at Upton Cressett.

Sorry to go off topic but you could do that sort of thing in the late sixties. Buy a derelict pile in the country for peanuts. I thought it was written a bit from the heart….

As for Citi living … Last night I had a half a packet of salty polish brand rollmops( Tesco reduced from 3.26 to 84p ) I soaked them in cider vinegar for two days and had half price broccoli stalks with some baby new potatoes plus salad with rocket and a bit of expensive 🥑.
Then you spoiled it all by sneaking out to Waitrose and buying a reduced bottle of no excuse red wine…

    What are humming bees ?

As for the winter heating crisis – come on M@S you should be making and offering cost price thermals for pensioners and babies.

“offering cost price thermals for pensioners and babies.”

And at half cost price for anyone who can tell the difference between the two.

Well yes Ian I have to keep reminding myself this is the fly zone lounge and anything goes.

I don’t know Bill Cash but last year we had doctor’s appointments at the same sort of time and in walked this light suited individual with sticks for walking. He was tall of stature but had such a warm personality – he spoke to everyone and sort of lit up the waiting room. Strangely enough he brought the same sort of good feel effect in as George Melly a few years ago who told the whole room as he picked up a magazine – “Oh these women’s magazines are terribly interesting wouldn’t you all agree ?” Anyway Bill sat next to me there were only three or four of us there and he started talking to me and told me had flown back from somewhere and we chatted about this or that and not knowing who he was, I thought this man is not depressed, like the other waiters, and must have lived a thoroughly interesting life. Google came to my assistance. Renovating the Shropshire house and the stress it brought had a big effect on his relationship with Biddy his wife, and killed it off, but he apparently found new love at the Manor. ( All from memory )

Tbf, it wasn’t hard for babies to love their food back in the day when Gripe Water had alcohol in it.

I’ve had a sudden brainstorm – this is how you make a click…

As for Sunak from a betting perspective I hope he gains ground and Liz runs out of ammo. Talk slow and look composed, is the best advice I can give Rishi for Monday.

It’s not how he,s talking it’s what he,s saying that’s the issue …no tax cut no votes , it’s that simple , Truss could take a dump on the the middle of the studio floor during the debate and still get more votes

    Glad.

    Let’s put this succinctly.

    You are embarrassing.

You stated that the countries economy was “tits up” pre covid

It wasn’t. The facts are there.

What makes it worse is that you continually claim others are “thick” and “lack comprehension” when you spout off without even the slightest consideration or understanding of the easily accessible facts.

You also insinuate that covid and Ukraine are excuses. Shall I continue on that theme?

You say you vote green and as I have said that is entirely appropriate because you certainly don’t pull up trees
