Sunak doing a video in dec is a huge plus. You definitely want someone with a plan and the ambition and why not make it clear that this has been the objective for some time.
Can’t agree about raab at all. He was thrown in front of the media at often very short notice with the worst possible brief time and again over the last year and as far as I saw and heard, handled it pretty well. He didn’t duck it either
Waiting now for the perceptive responses from the ever intellectually high flying left of “he’s not!” “He’s crap!”
July 9, 2022 at 08:01 #1606145I would suggest that, rather than a conniving Sergeant Bilko, with Tungendhat the fear has to be that, when it comes to domestic policy, he’s a bit of a Colonel Hall.
I’ve just been reading about him and pronouncements on anything domestic seem thin on the ground.
He’s been banned from China and that seems the most notable thing about him on some levels.
But, as Brough Scott once famously said about the runners in the 1981 2,000 Guineas, there are reasons why none of them can win it.
You can pick holes in all of them, even the eventual winner whoever that may be.
This shower have been around long enough and it’s only three years since Johnson was picked ahead of all of them – that’s how low the standard is.
Nodding dog talentless Cabinet, ex-Cabinet Johnson enemies in the wilderness so long they’ve forgotten the way to the Cabinet office and younger Johnson opponents with no experience.
But one of them must win.
I could see Tungendhat making the final two, but anyone to the right of him (and afaik that’s all of them) will surely beat him when they’re put to the unreconstructed right wing party membership.

July 9, 2022 at 08:06 #1606147That is a point though. Sgt bilko etc have dealt with policy briefs that are too narrow and they aren’t tested on their views or how to handle opposing views
Only a very small number of candidates have wide enough experience for me
Two sgt bilkos doesn’t work so one must be Doberman
July 9, 2022 at 08:06 #1606148Well, for me it’s 1.01 he is and he did all that spending kicking and screaming in a unique situation.
The whole thing was anathema to him and he pretty much said as much.
In fact, he was honest to say when asked for even more: “If I agree, what’s the difference between us and the Labour Party?”
The word “extreme” gets put into people’s mouths and generally bandied around too much here – he’s not “extreme,” but he is a right-wing Tory in the mould of a Margaret Thatcher.

He framed it. Who else could have would have?
And it was one of the first schemes implemented anywhere
He could have ditched the gov lending to businesses months ago. It only expired a week ago
July 9, 2022 at 08:34 #1606152I read that Steve Baker is not standing and has given his support to Suella Braveman.
I believe Raab has ruled himself out as well.
July 9, 2022 at 08:36 #1606153Not everyone likes Tugendhat:

I think this, as I’ve probably said before, is partly why Johnson didn’t get booted out sooner. If you were sat around plotting, there would have been an awkward silence as soon as the point of ‘who replaces him?’ is raised. Being a Johnson nodding dog works when he’s in charge but you’ll soon be found out once he’s gone.

Of course. Then scheme and plot over the next six months on how to stab your leader in the back. Well done, Brutus!
July 9, 2022 at 08:48 #1606156I’ve got a theory about Raab. In the past people from all parties have got along quite well and had a lot of mutual respect but I honestly don’t think the opposition parties have any respect for the majority of Conservative MP’s these days. But my theory about Raab is that they quite like him. The banter between him and Angela the other day was good humoured and I think they both enjoyed it. Even though Angela ( imo) slaughtered him he handled himself quite well.
July 9, 2022 at 08:55 #1606159I thought that too moe. You could sense it and it wouldn’t have had those barely suppressed smirks otherwise.
Read alan duncan’s (excellent) diaries and it bears out what you are saying exactly. People can be ideologically identical but can’t stand each other and vice versa
July 9, 2022 at 08:57 #1606160Which senior cabinet minister who stayed loyal to Johnson beyond the end has privately described him as a “cosmic c***”?
I’m wondering if the answer is above
July 9, 2022 at 08:59 #1606161“you knew what I meant!”
Being a total pedant when it comes to spelling and grammar (although, sadly, not immune to the occasional typo), this argument really gets on my goat.
Imagine if we applied the same lax approach to maths? What’s 5000×100? Ten million! Not correct, of course, but you know what I mean; it’s a big number.
Grammar and spelling exist so that we can make clear what we mean and others can understand us. Of course, language evolves (usually through the invention of new words) but the basic principles remain immutable.
July 9, 2022 at 09:01 #1606162Excellent times gossipy piece today on tbe race. (The times really is a superb paper)
Sunak is possibly striking a deal with tugrndhat whereby he becomes foreign sec. Good one
Not scoring points here because this is slightly surprising to me to but
…he’s being supported mostly by the centrist one nation tories with the patronising freak JRM calling him a “socialist chancellor”
I have a feeling that jrm is not at all well liked amongst mps being a untalented self promoter

It’ll certainly be interesting if the last two are Sunak and Tugendhat. Will the membership hold their noses and vote in a coloured leader as his Thatcherite credentials are, to them, preferable to a centrist?
July 9, 2022 at 09:08 #1606165Why don’t your stupid obsession with racist tories ?
One minute it’s the members then when that’s blown away by facts then it’s the voters and when that’s blown away by facts you just repeat like a retarded parrot
Again and again. Sunak has topped polls with Tory members and voters by huge margins in the past.
