Neil,
Which Derby winners in the last 20 years won because they were lucky?
Not many, if any I would think.
Ginge
Sir Percy.
Firstly because Ballydoyle admitted to having no idea how to ride Dylan Thomas and therefore sent him straight to the front. As we now know, he needs to be held up.
Secondly, Halla Beck(?) stumbled about 3 metres sideways when looking like the winner.Sir Percy wasn’t a lucky winner. He couldn’t get the position he wanted from the stalls so Martin Dwyer was further back than he wanted to be then when he did want to get out Frankie Dettori on his outside kept him in.
I’d hardly call that lucky, the horse just dug in and managed to get up on the line. Whilst the racing press were largely in praise of Martin Dwyer’s ride I was far from in praise of it.

April 15, 2008 at 14:34 #157912I’d be suprised if anyone watched the overhead replay of Sir Percys Derby and didn’t come to the conclusion Hala Bek should have won that race.
I’d put him as a relatively fortunate winner.

If so, he’d have to be the least well known / least raced derby winner of the modern era.
That old warrior Lammtarra would be something of a stalwart by comparison.

April 15, 2008 at 16:32 #157924I actually backed Sir Percy that day and I’ve got to admit lucky or not its the best feeling I’ve had winning a race. For excitement its been the best derby for a while.
April 15, 2008 at 16:46 #157930Sir Percy was only really lucky in the sense that it was a terrible race on the day, Hala Bek threw the race away but sir percy came flying up the home straight past beaten horses and whereas halabek was the other who was travelling strongly, he didnt pull out what sir percy did on the day, and he won. I didnt back him and wasnt a fan of that derby, as it was a reallly poor race IMO, but Sir Percy was the horse on the day and won it fair and square. The merit of Sir Percys derby win was a long running point of contention on here though.
April 15, 2008 at 16:57 #157934Intresting that Sir Percy done sweet FA after the derby.
I agree it was poor, excluding Dylan Thomas, but what excitement – 4 way blanket finish, heart stopper.
