Huge, huge call I know but was ever so impressed with him today in the Challow hurdle. Greatrex said befire that the heavier the better for this guy. Jumped hurdles as though he should be a chaser. Just think this race could play yo his strengths. Going yo try and get a price for him to win a Welsh national one day!
December 30, 2017 at 15:28 #1335035Not for me, appears a fair bit of temperament, Ponti’. Did nothing wrong in the finish today but carries his head a bit high and swishes tail. Possibly flattered today. Big field may not suit him as likes being out on his own. Lot of the time horses like him don’t hold their form for very long.
Value Is EverythingDecember 30, 2017 at 15:33 #1335038With another trainer I might share your enthusiasm. I fear Greatrex will ruin him like he ruins so many other horses, especially given the temperament already flashing through.

At the price youll be quoted i dont think its a bad shout, only his second run over hurdles, plenty of time to iron out the issues
December 30, 2017 at 20:26 #1335075Big call, you said it. Imagine it does win the Welsh national and you didn’t have a dime on. Go for it and let us know what price you haggled.

December 30, 2017 at 21:39 #1335083It’ll be interesting to see what price you get.
His sire Brian Boru has a 20% strike rate from his chasing stock at Chepstow (5/25) although from 69 runs at 3m2f + (all tracks) they’ve mustered only 2 wins. Temperament wise, it’s early days, but Brian Boru is the sire of Shotgun Paddy.
Belsalsa, dam of Mulcahys Hill, has just one other foal, Penn Lane, also with Greatrex. Neither of her sons has won beyond 2m5f.
December 30, 2017 at 21:53 #1335088Only reason I’m this saying this is, immediately after the race all I could think about was him in a heavy ground staying chase, so obviously Chepstow sprung to mind. I’ve had that sort of epiphany about horses in future races only twice. Thistlecrack for the Gold Cup after jumping the last in the Long Walk, and Ulysses for the King George after thr Gordon. Sadly neither came to fruition but we’re pretty good shouts if I say so myself.
Regarding what you all say about Mulcahys Hill I definitely agree with. Hopefully the temperament issue can be sorted. Although I don’t believe he needs to be out alone in front.
I’ll update as and when I get a price about it
December 30, 2017 at 22:34 #1335093Backed him e/w at 16/1 today mainly due to the ground and was absolutely gutted by the result. Yet another of this month’s near misses.
He’ll make a smashing chaser but one wonders if he’ll always show his best in the depths of winter.
October 25, 2019 at 23:35 #1472783Decent attitude from him today, would be some shout Ponti.
October 26, 2019 at 15:43 #1472920ill be having a go, WHOLESTONE aint no mug and im all about that epiphany s**t!
October 27, 2019 at 00:12 #1472947Was certainly interesting Ray, and if he did get an entry, you could hardly rule him out.

November 24, 2019 at 11:23 #1475761Didn’t get an entry for Welsh National, but still in The Becher.
December 4, 2019 at 11:30 #1476512He might not be going to Chepstow, but he’s very popular for The Becher now, and clear favourite in places.
I haven’t bet him, but no doubt I’ll be kicking myself come Saturday, after discussing him here.
