How do you describe what a MUG PUNTER is?
Perhaps one is someone who does not think outside the box, perhaps who chases the same old same old ready to hand information or maybe tries to re-figure it according to current or back fitted thinking. Would you only bet if the animal has CD in the form line, only ever bet if top weight or never bet if it is top weight etc. etc. etc.
I am a MUG PUNTER, it is almost 10 years ago when SWIMBO was raised here, if I recall the story went something like this: – frequenting a betting shop a chap placed a bet on a horse with the name involving that of a grandchild. As the story continued I believe it went on to win. Was it a MUG BET?
Manchester United and Liverpool supporters are known to bet horses with Red in the name. Mugs? Maybe. I am sure there are many such stories or connotations and the bookies must love us for it.
I still remain a MUG PUNTER. Only this morning was I looking through Wednesdays runners in Australia and DAPHNE JEAN jumped from the screen, which of course is my wife’s name, running in race 3 at Gosford. I could not help but look, my provision choice being ENAMOUR, as it happens did not make the cut but DAPHNE JEAN was in my head. Later via a different site there it was again but this time tipped! This is why I am a MUG PUNTER, tips are my weakness but still I tried to ignore it but the inevitable was futile because on the 3rd site there it was again, DAPHNE JEAN is not to be ignored.
Know knowing I am a MUG PUNTER I was about to become an even bigger one and took an each way bet at SP.

February 25, 2020 at 16:14 #1483847A mug punter is someone who bets in mugs and not pound notes…

I think there are different and many ways to be classed as a mug punter
lack of discipline/patience
betting on something for the sake of it
betting beyond ones means
chasing losses
FOTB’s
as ginger may say backing something non value
not learning from making the same mistake over again
bingo
taking on the scammers abroad with the 3 cupsGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
February 25, 2020 at 17:14 #1483853My name is Mo and I am a mug punter. Albeit happily so. W Hill internet account, topped up every so often [albeit not by much]. Racing radio on most afternoons and throw 3 pence ew bets at any nag that looks as if it has a miniscule chance of winning. Horses that have been off the track are a big favourite of mine; promising conditionals; Ken Pittersons paddock picks etc. Currently backing outsiders in those weekday Irish handicaps that have loads of runners. You name and I’ll throw 3 pence ew at it. My argument being that, if I went out [which I haven’t been able to do recently as I’m surrounded by floods] I’d spend far more in petrol. I’ve actually got 40 + ante post bets floating around that have cost me the sum total of £2.40. Miserable Corals stopped giving me best odds guaranteed so I left them [their loss!].
February 25, 2020 at 17:30 #1483855I have searched the system vaults for the origin of Swimbo‘s system, I searched all 80 pages, so far back that even MrE was a young man. Maybe I missed it, maybe I am also a lot older, maybe my eyesight is poor [they said it would happen], nevertheless was it Swimbo or Rickerty who dug out Grandads System?
Can you find it?

February 25, 2020 at 23:28 #1483879I started to read that thread Wurzel mentioned and got bored halfway through….
Young Primrose has started something once again, old Billy has a flare for poking the hornets nest….
From my point of view, Mo is correct, she (I think she is a “she”) and my sincere apologies if this particular Mo has grown a pair of “danglies”… but she is the epitome of a “mug punter”, and I mean no disrespect…. both sides of the fence can lose money one way or the other. The difference being that the “mug” knows they are gonna lose and just enjoys the journey with it’s ups and downs, they probably enjoy this game far more than the so called “serious bettors” do…. each have their place.
Without a doubt, “Mugs” have the edge on enjoyment…. the “non mugs” are the ones that suffer deeply for their passion… where a “mug” really doesn’t give a rat’s arse about winning or losing, the “non mug” is convinced that they are a cut above the normal punter…. they see themselves as the “truth and the light”.
Now you have to take a sidestep into reality, who enjoys this “game” more….. and really guys, you have to enjoy the game or walk away from it, if you don’t like it or your continually losing, then getting on your bike is the only thing…. this is a decision that “mugs” don’t have to make…. Mo is very happy with what he/she is doing… I would even go so far as to say that Mo is enjoying the experience more than anybody else on the forum.
I tend to think that we are all blinkered in this aspect….. there is always room for “mugs” just as much as there is room for the more “professional” of us…. some enjoy the moment, the rush of adrenaline of short term success, but others work hard at the P/L angle to try and ensure that they come our on the “right” side…to this day, I am unsure of who is correct. I am of the opinion that making a profit is the be all and end all and I will work 10hrs a day to that end, but Mo can enjoy the fruits of her/his labour with absolutely no concern to her bank…. just like going out for a burger…. I think I envy her/him…..

February 26, 2020 at 07:26 #1483887I remember having some really good winning days when I was a mug punter.
This was in the early 1990’s and I would back popular jockeys or trainers in multiple bets of all decriptions, from Trixies to Goliaths.Had some very good results from back Martin Pipes and Mary Reveley’s horses in particular.
As for jockeys Dettori, Richard Quinn and Michael Roberts always seemed to come up trumps for me.Then I learned a bit more about handicapping and reading the form book, systems etc. hardly won jack **** since!

February 26, 2020 at 13:40 #1483899Nathan. Did I really start all those conversations?
I could only have been a teenager back then.
I am shattered with a capital “F” having arrived here in Norfolk where it is almost tropical at 7 degrees with a calming northerly breeze.
I will check through all that rubbish after an afternoon snooze.

February 26, 2020 at 15:35 #1483921I wouldn’t class Mo a mug punter as such because she is using sensible staking
The real mugs are the poor souls are those heavily addicted and throw the wages into the machines

Have you never experienced the feeling of being on a roll?
I have, it’s wonderful but sadly does not last long.

February 28, 2020 at 13:58 #1484113Pay attention Nathan.
At Newcastle this evening you may be interested in two races: –
6.15 – KLOPP
7.15 – KLIPPERTY KLOPPI was rather taken by the early favourite in Dundalk 5.30 BILLYFAIRPLAY . . . . WON 7/2
I wonder what Swimbo would have to say about these?
