MOVING TO ASHFORD
I wouldn’t have to put up with a karaoke going on 5 feet above my head, once a fortnight on a Saturday evening. What really gets me, is that it is the same people singing the same songs each time.I save £140 a month in train fares.
I’d only have to get up at 5am to go to work, instead of 4am.
I’d get home in time to bet on or watch those all-important 2yo 5f maidens at 2.10 and 2.20
One day, some arsehole is going to flood the basement of the pub, and anything that I’ve got on the floor will be ruined.
My room in Dover is cold and damp, with no heating. One day, I will catch Double Pneumonia, and die.
Will get broadband as standard part of rent. (Unfortunately, still have 14 months of 18 months mobile internet contract to pay.)
Might be able to get cable or satellite TV, so can watch ATR, and perhaps also baseball on NASN.
Might have a nymphomaniac Polish girl as housemate.
Will be able to go cycling on Romney Marsh.
Will be able to catch Eurostar at 7.30am on Sunday mornings to go to Paris.
I will be able to start overtime on Sundays at 6am instead of 8.30am.
One day I will lose my job for swearing at one of the blueshirts, and it will be easier to find another job in Ashford.
STAYING IN DOVER
I have the Racing Channel in my room, so long as it is on that channel in the bar instead of Rugby Union. (What is the point of Rugby Union? They can’t play for more than 20 seconds without there being a penalty. I used to be a hooker at school, because I was shortish and podgy, and it was ridiculous: if I attempted to go for the ball, we would be pushed backwards, and if I shoved forward I couldn’t make a play for the ball.)One day I will lose my job for swearing at one of the blueshirts, but I will still have the security of having a roof over my head, as the landlord will look after me.
February 25, 2009 at 03:58 #212216The Polish angle would swing it for me, Gerald. Moving home is very stressful so the Polish chick might help you to relax.
February 25, 2009 at 12:22 #212237Ashford,
Warmth, money & time saved.
Regards – Matron
February 25, 2009 at 14:03 #212246The living in the pub bit swings it for me – can’t you move the polish chick in and break the karaoke machine?
February 25, 2009 at 15:14 #212259Send the Polish chick out to work while you watch ATR. When she comes home you can then ride tandem.
February 25, 2009 at 18:31 #212296Closeness to Ashford International and trips to Auteuil, Enghien to see Loulia, Remember Rose, Temple Prince etc. would do for me

I would move to Eastbourne but good luck in your ventures.
February 26, 2009 at 17:40 #212443Both places are dumps.
Get out of Kent altogether – quick!
February 26, 2009 at 23:05 #212499They’re both upmarket from where I was born. (Deal.)
I’m not old enough to move to Eastbourne yet.
The most important thing is the job – I’m not very good at getting them, so I want to hold on to this one. It is the easiest job in the world; what prevents it also being the most boring job in the world is that I operate more than one machine at the same time.
May 1, 2009 at 19:03 #224842Okay, I’ve just done the dirty deed. I’ve paid one week’s deposit (£70), plus this month’s rent (£300). I think it is probably a 1960s-70s 3 bedroom council-build in South Ashford, about a 15 minute walk from work, and a 30 minute walk from the Town Centre.
Apparently there is wireless connectiion to the Internet, but I’ll find out about that early next week.
I’ve got a large room with a double bed. I’ll sleep there for the first time on Saturday, so that I can start work at 6am on Sunday.
I feel guilty, and am putting off until tomorrow afternoon telling the pub landlord that I am moving out. I also paid a deposit when I moved in 2.5 years ago, but I feel embarrassed to ask for it back.
There is a smaller room still going free in the house, so there is still hope for a Polish nymphomaniac housemate.
Am currently paying £50 a week rent, so my rent will go up by £20 per week.
I will save £37 a week in travel.
I earnt £10,524 in 2008-09 so apparently my Working Tax Credit will get cut from £49 pw to less than £20 per week.
So in total I will be about £13 per week worse off. On the other hand, I can now work an extra 2.5 hours overtime on Sundays (plus the other Sundays I miss because of engineering works), which will cover that £13.I’m now off to buy some containers to pack my junk in.
I’ll PM Cormack to change my profile on Monday.
May 1, 2009 at 19:34 #224852Good luck with the move, Gerald!
May 1, 2009 at 19:45 #224855Best of luck Gerald
I hope all goes well.

May 1, 2009 at 20:02 #224863I really hope you’re happy in your new home, Gerald. It can’t be easy leaving familiar surroundings but you’ll always have your friends on here.
As for the deposit, the landlord will probably want to set that off against repairs where you’ve had all those posters of Cormack pinned to the bedroom wall.
Cheers
KenMay 2, 2009 at 03:33 #224981Gerald, I currently reside in Arseford.
The karaoke Harpies you mention is spot on. I don’t think I could survive living above that satanic din.
Hmm, there isn’t that much to do here. However, the travel links are good and if it allows you to get to work more easily then it is probably a good thing.

May 2, 2009 at 04:12 #224989Hi Zippy, I’m not really into socialising or doing things, so living in a supposed dead town doesn’t concern me.
Getting a good Internet connection is important to me (so that i can start watching videos of races), as well as getting either a cable or satellite tv link. The main things I enjoy watching are cycling, baseball and racing – probably in that order.
I plan to get a bike and do a fair amount of cycling.
Apart from that, I don’t bother with life too much.Gerald
May 2, 2009 at 21:22 #225154Just told the landlord I’m moving on Monday.
In return for me not getting my deposit back, which I don’t particularly remember how much it was, he will get his man and van to move my stuff for me.
I’m quite happy with that, as I wasn’t expecting to get my deposit back anyway.
May 2, 2009 at 21:57 #225166What happened with the Polish Nypho ?
