There’s a thread in the Lounge discussing how even many quiz specialists are ignorant of very famous (to us!) racehorses.

This got me wondering, which racehorses do you think would have the highest public recognition in the UK nowadays?

My rough idea of the top 10 is below, with the “most famous” first. I would be interested to know other people’s opinions, though would point out that Constitution Hill and Blackbeard were both considered and ruled out ;-)

    1) Red Rum
    2) Shergar
    3) Arkle
    4) Desert Orchid
    5) Aldaniti
    6) Frankel
    7) Tiger Roll
    8) Kauto Star
    9) Denman
    10) Best Mate

    Does National Velvet count? lol
But on a similar note, I’m guessing Seabiscuit might get some name recognition in the UK just from the movie?

Denman? No chance the general public would remember him.

    Completely agree with this.

It was Red Rum, then maybe Shergar after the kidnapping, back in the day.

    Now it would be Frankel.

Stateside, it might be Secretariat back in the day and now Flightline if he got a lot of mainstream news coverage out there.

As said, age is everything here, location too – is anyone from Ireland not going to have Arkle top?- but a fair list. I’m a Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle, King George snob, but for fame Red Rum was from the three channel era when the Grand National was a proper stomach churning race and would top the list – though my personal mid seventies favourite was Captain Christy, and my three favourite jumpers of all time, Monksfield, Night Nurse and Sea Pigeon. Captain Christy probably unjustified in retrospect being a good ground/fast ground, difficult to train horse, but the other three would stand the test of time. In relatively recent times though that Kauto / Denman era was truly riveting and will maybe prove to be the last great steeplechasing era of the sport – and thankfully I did attend their Gold Cups but haven’t been since and maybe never again.

Marlingford’s list looks broadly right. I suggest Desert Orchid and Tiger Roll would be second and third, ahead of Shergar and Arkle.

Plenty of people will remember Desert Orchid’s four wins at Christmas.

The Grand National is still by far and away the big race as far as the public is concerned. Tiger Roll winning twice so recently must make him better known than the likes of Aldaniti.

Depends on if the a film on them.

    For that reason I think

DREAM ALLIANCE, SEA BISCUIT, SECRETIART, BLACK BEAUTY AND THE HORSE FROM LLOYDS ADVERTS.

    ‘THE HORSE FROM LLOYDS ADVERTS’.

He was called Cancara Rummy. :good:
The original Cancara represented Lloyds for 16 years but has sadly since died. He was a Trakehner stallion, 16 hands high an absolute beauty

Frankel would be my top horse as most well known for this moment in time but have heard several quiz questions were he has been named in the answer as the winner of the ‘Grand National. But then I know nothing about football, cricket, golf so could easily give an equally stupid answer if asked any questions on those subjects.

Likewise on football, the was a recent question on when was the world Cup first shown in colour, on the chase. Your opinions were England 1966, Mexico 1970 or West Germany 1974. Thought it was 1974, but the correct answer was 1970.

On famous horses I also thought of Phar Lap and Mr Ed, the also Black Bess. The first 2 not been seen on TV for sometime. The last was the horse to a infamous highway man, Dick Turnip I think.

Thanks, some interesting replies already, and further are welcome. This is all relative of course as I am sure only a small proportion of the UK’s population could name 10 racehorses.

While Tiger Roll and Frankel might be the most famous horses of more recent times, I don’t think racing has the same public reach as it used to. Therefore I believe the much wider awareness that older generations have of the horses that are higher on my list will mean these horses are still the most famous overall.

I agree the Grand National remains much the most famous race, and there is probably a case for including more famous names from that – Foinavon, Crisp, the most recent winners etc.

There’s definitely also a case for including horses that have had films made about them such as Seabiscuit and Dream Alliance.

“What happened to Roy Rogers horse Trigger?

He passed away at the age of 30, in 1965. He was at Roger’s ranch in Apple Valley, California. His cause of death is unknown, but is thought to be just from natural causes. After Trigger passed, he was stuffed and mounted at the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Museum.21 Sept 2022”

I asked my Son this question and bearing in mind he was born in 2006 his answer was

“I don’t watch horse racing but listening to you shout at the telly, dad, I will say”
“Brave Inca, Kauto Star, Ouija Board, Snow Fairy, Canford Cliffs, Toronado, Faugheen, Paisley Park, Blackbeard, Gaelic Warrior and Hope that bloody Ian Davies finishes last in this competition”.. :rose:

“What happened to Roy Rogers horse, Trigger?”

Asked that to any non race goers and they’ll think you mean the character played by Roger Lloyd Pack in Only Fools And Horses.

Of cos the real annoying thing is the answer Thats before my time on a history question. They’ve entered a quiz, surely they should have some knowledge of history.

The correct answer to this is always…

    Desert Orchid
    Red Rum
    Shergar

    ……in no particular order
