Sorry Ginger, I misinterpreted, and probably also projected my own views. I do see the homepage as something of an embarrassment to the forum and wish it was better.
I understand why things are the way they are though, and appreciate it is not that important in the grand scheme of things. There was a particularly bad article that Bachelors Hall rightly kicked up a fuss about a while back, but on the whole I find the dreadful articles tolerable/amusing.
October 7, 2023 at 07:34 #1665887All joking aside, I regard TRF as a cracking forum which bizarrely has the most lousy wider public profile.
It has an amateurish Twitter account which all too often reads like an individual’s account – right down to utterly irrelevant to racing ad hoc comments on televised football matches – and the most ludicrous series of home page items here you could imagine.
Cracking forum, but, as a website, it couldn’t market its way out of a paper bag.
The pure cringe fest gives no clue as to the gems on its actual forum, which includes contributors of the quality of Alan Potts.
It clearly isn’t going to change and none of its critics needs feel obliged to ask to intervene to make it better any more than any of them should obliged to run for parliament at the next election if they don’t like the way the country is being run and regularly say so.
Maybe there should be an alternative home page here in the Lounge, a thread where forumites – IF they CHOOSE to do so – can pen items themselves and show the assorted chat bots and casino marketeers what sound writing and a genuine knowledge of racing actually is.
Cba myself – waste of valuable hob nob eating and Life And Times Of Chezza Volume 247-writing time – but someone might want to have a go.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 7, 2023 at 15:08 #1665961Slightly diverging from the topic but, apart from contributing on the forum, do you do any other writing nowadays Ian? That isn’t a hint to write homepage articles as I totally understand your stance on that. However, I know you background is journalism, so am asking out of curiosity.
I would imagine that, with the advent of the internet, paid opportunities to write about racing have probably declined, and are likely to continue to do so as AI improves.
October 7, 2023 at 16:09 #1665966No, I left all that behind a long time ago, Marlingford, in 2001 to be precise.
I was primarily a production journalist (though I wrote loads of tipping pieces in my formative Racing & Football Outlook days) but The Independent, where I ended my days in journalism, was so cash strapped it was the land of opportunity and the keen googler can find published material from me, not only about racing, but subjects as diverse as Black Sabbath and Gary Kasparov.
I write for fun, not financial reward, nowadays and I have a weekly Podcast-style broadcast on a bespoke Facebook page – “The Horse Racing Punter” – which I also link to from my protected Twitter (sorry, X!) account.
I don’t crave a big audience – which is just as well as I don’t have one! – but I enjoy doing it, along with posting here on TRF, and that’s the main thing.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 8, 2023 at 07:23 #1666003Is the chezza ting exclusive to here or are you more clement Freud elsewhere. Travelling from station to station to get your points on.
( I remember him using the London Underground to hit the bookies with a touch once recanted in his Sunday column). Before Henry filled his coffers much more reliably.October 8, 2023 at 07:33 #1666004It’s a TRF exclusive – aren’t you all lucky?
Gladders invented the “Chezza” nickname, Chezza decided to run with it, probably ran too far and too often but, to the utter mystification of the haters, quite a few forumites don’t take it seriously and even find it mildly amusing to the extent that they go along with it and even at times provoke more “Chezzaish” activity.
I adopt a different persona for my “The Horse Racing Punter” broadcasts on Facebook, the next of which is due online this morning, currently happily playing to modest audiences of between 30 and 60 each week.
Some who adopt multiple personas claim no one knows the “real” them.
Actually, I disagree, as I believe every persona reveals a little bit of who you are, or think you are, or aspire to be, which imo is kinda all part of the same thing anyway as I believe we can all be whoever we want to be and should ignore any constraints, limits, or ceilings others might try to place upon us.
You’re only Sam The Tree Killer if YOU decide that’s (part of) who you are – you can ignore the very **** out of herberts like me trying to foist the title on you if you like, which you no doubt frequently do.
It’s all good – except for miserable gits, who take everything and everyone literally, and are perennially minded to be negative, that is.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"October 8, 2023 at 08:01 #1666006The world is populated by miserable gits and it is my mission to get some of them to see the lighter side of things and not take themselves seriously and to be nice to each other.
Sam ttk ( it takes some getting used to) employed the mighty rohaan to take out the mighty English oak in the tree thread. Mitresonfire followed them home. But I was too sweet on rohaan to worry about any other runner much but all three were connected by the draw and that batty concept of free energy I allude to. I’m not rich yet but I have fleshed out 33 winners this week based on my sporting Sam nutty professor persona. Tricasts which are the key to the universe might yet get me off a diet of sawdust and pedigree chum. Photosynthesis has also jumped out of the tree thread albeit after the race but post race in the dlaps.
We are not in a nice place horrible people are doing horrible things to each other how do you tell young uns it’s all your fault and that you blamed the old uns for being bad when it was you all along. I said to a small person that it was going tits up in the Middle East and she said we’re f@@ked aren’t we? I’d never said no in my entire life but couldn’t answer her positively. I did eventually answer her with a ray of hope but not truthfully.
So I’m fighting mine and her corner as best I can and trying to make a difference in my immediate world the Swiss cheese approach. Another person came up to me out of the blue yesterday and told me she had no hope. Just like that I told her there’s plenty and hopefully by the end of the day had changed her outlook to very positive. Plants heal in real time. As Nathbet said where do you find the time to post and garden? It’s my time and I’m making a difference somewhere.
The only way to fend off an unwanted moniker is to simply love it….
I LOVE IT.October 8, 2023 at 09:06 #1666008Only just read this as I’ve been busy recording and uploading my weekly offering online.
Great post from you, IMO, Sam – loved that.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 13, 2024 at 22:34 #1677284Sorry to raise this subject again but in the Three Horses To Keep An Eye On article, the said horses are:
Galopin Des Champs
Ylang Ylang
LookawayDidn’t City Of Troy deserve a mention? I doubt anyone in Ballydoyle thinks Ylang Ylang is more worthy of attention!
The same article looks at the highlights of the British racing calendar and cites three: the Cheltenham Festival, Aintree and…the Ulster National at Downpatrick.
Now, I have been to Downpatrick and I liked it very much – but equating it with Cheltenham and Aintree is a bit of a stretch.
And as for the advice at the end: “Before placing bets on any upcoming horse races, the thing to remember is to conduct as much research as possible to give you a much better chance of winning”.
Thanks, I never knew that!
Yes, I know these articles pay for the privilege and keep the forum free – but really…
January 13, 2024 at 22:39 #1677285I wouldn’t profess to be the world’s greatest wordsmith, but honestly, it’s all just so clumsily written.
Just about every sentence grates in one way or another.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 16, 2024 at 21:47 #1677593From the home page article about racing and “climate change”:
“With the current rain and flooding issues, this will naturally bring the topic back to the fore given the number of events that have had to be postponed or cancelled, and one of the more favoured options that has been brought into the debate is the possible return to all weather jumps racing.”
Where does that come from? I have not heard a single person say they want to see the return of all weather jumps racing.
January 16, 2024 at 22:13 #1677595Strange coincidence that as I bizarrely looked up all weather jumping on YouTube a couple of hours ago. It was a complete disaster for horse well fair and should stay in history. This was the only one that popped up.
The more I know the less I understand.
February 15, 2024 at 22:56 #1681229Time to resurrect this one again.
There is an article on the front page about the Gold Cup prospects of Bravemansgame. We are informed that “Bravemansgame has quickly become a strong contender for the title…His performances recently have been strong, and the bookies are talking.” And his “form at the minute has been impeccable.”
That’s funny: I thought he is a horse that has run three times this year and not won a single race.
We are also advised that Bravemansgame game is “predicted the win” but Galopin Des Champs is his “closest contender”.
Seriously, who writes this stuff?
February 15, 2024 at 23:07 #1681238HDLG probably wrote that one…
