After being rather quiet, a few articles have been published on the home page.

We have discussed these before and I realise they keep this site free of use, so perhaps it is wrong to complain.

But the article headed “Why do many racing horses have names associated with luck?” What is it meant to be about?

It contains this observation: “Because of the online betting market, it is now feasible to place a wager without physically attending the event.”

Erm, hasn’t that been the case since those things called betting shops were opened?

Then there is the article headed “How to make money in horse racing betting”. This contains the advice: “Weather. The outsider will have a better chance of winning the race if it rains on that day at the racetrack”.

Who came up with that gem? What if the favourite likes soft ground?

I could have chosen a few more examples.

There is also an article on memorable Grand Nationals – one month after the Aintree marathon was run!

I’m starting to think the “powers that be” at TRF have about as much grasp of what’s going on at their own website as Colonel Hall had about what was occurring at Fort Baxter in “Sergeant Bilko.”

Prompted by this thread, I just paid my first visit to the home page in ages and “excruciatingly embarrassing” doesn’t even come close.

And at a time when I think the actual forum is flying – the main folder is very topical and right on top of the news, Big-Race Discussion just gets better and better and the Lounge is eclectic, mad, fun and has a really positive, courteous, atmosphere at present.

The forum deserves so much better than the Home Page material that fronts the site.

I see CAS’s thread has been moved to the Lounge – the equivalent of moving it from the Ant & Dec ITV1 prime time Saturday night slot to BBC4 at 3am on a Monday morning?

I’d have thought it was a universal TRF thread topic that would interest every single member of TRF personally, but there you go.

It certainly doesn’t make everything CAS writes any less true IMO.

Bloke at the bookies once told if its raining always back trap 1 and trap 6
I thought perhaps he had some long range stats or science behind his statement so asked him why’s that then?
He said because hes been watching it this morning, its raining and either trap 1 or trap 6 have won the first three races…

I am not particularly concerned about the thread being moved to the Lounge – but as the articles in question are about horse racing I thought it was best to start the thread in the Horse Racing section.

I agree with Archipenko that the articles do have the look of being written by some sort of computer program instead of by a human being. They are very poorly written.

I guess, as ever, it all boils down to TRF being a free resource and presumably advertorials facilitate that.

But they are so poorly written, I don’t see how they positively promote anything.

    A ghost speaks…

“Just a quick word about Tor Mentor. He (me, of course) was never meant to be a Tormentor, as I think the boss thought, and quickly banned him. Anyone heard of Letterboxing? It’s not rude like dogging  It’s what some do as a hobby on Dartmoor and its Tors. One such group of these are called the Tor Mentors- hence the name.

I hope this Tor Mentor was never beastly or horrid to ME!

I’ll have to review my long-term online relationship with gamble if he was!

I’d prefer dogging to letterboxing if taking up a new hobby

    Dogging is no hobby Gnats.
It’s surely a way of life.

The old timers saying ‘a man’s best friend is his dogging pair’ confirms it.

    From the most recent article:

“While some horses thrive on hard tracks, others do better on tracks that are gentler or that become wet.”

Not much chance of hard ground nowadays!

The latest article is entitled “Cheltenham Festival 2024: 4 Willie Mullins Chasers to Follow”.

2 are Impaire Et Passe and State Man. How do we now they will be running over fences? There must be a good chance at least one will stay hurdling.

Another is El Fabiolo, described as being aimed towards the Ryanair. I would have thought it more likely he will run in the Champion Chase.

Best of all is the last of the quartet: Corbetts Cross. He is not even trained by Willie Mullins!

As I’m incredibly shallow, the fact I feel David Cormack has been less hostile – and even civil – towards me lately means I feel I must defend the Home Page!

Plus I like a challenge – and that Home Page isn’t terribly easy to defend a lot of the time!

More fair comment from you, CAS, I think on balance.

Another gem, comparing prize money between America and Britain.

Is it really fair to criticise the prize money on offer in the Grand National? It is a race once described as an “obstacle course for aged geldings”.

It is unrealistic to think the National is going to offer the sort of prize money on offer in the top Flat races which are so important for the breeding industry. If anything, you could argue the prize money is too high for a graded handicap.
