You are out in front jumping beautifully against a rival who has been off the course for ages. What do you do? I would have thought kicking on and stretching the opposition would have been a much better idea than allowing three of them to overtake you. Shocking performance.
January 5, 2008 at 14:19 #133489Stilvi-I could be wrong but you dont Like Andrew Thormton….
The horse fell what can he do?
January 5, 2008 at 14:52 #133498Stilvi,
Try watching the race again – Miss Mitch made a bad mistake at the water, catching her hind legs. It was exactly the sort of incident that causes horses to pull muscles in the back or in the hind quarters.
She’s not moving right after that and her fall, where she simply failed to get high enough at the open ditch, was also typical of a horse that has hurt itself.
The commentator missed the error at the water, but you can clearly see the splash she makes.

January 5, 2008 at 15:30 #133502Ap this is why alot of tracks are getting rid of ”water jumps” they do cause alot of injuries, another coomen one is back strain as they tend to bend slightly sideways when jumping such a low fence at pace

Apologies, but I would argue it would be very difficult to guage the severity of the mistake from this distance. Your point would be perfectly valid had she been injured. If Thornton felt she was injured there was ample time to pull up. As he continued I stand by the original comment – perhaps if she had been in a clear lead she wouldn’t have made the mistake? Just for the record it was unseated rider not a fall.
Like or dislike would imply I actually know Thornton. Any comments I have made on here are purely opinions about his riding.
January 5, 2008 at 16:54 #133521That last post is absolute nonsense, stilvi, and the fact you’ve had to correct us ‘for the record’ says to me you know you’re talking rubbish.
January 5, 2008 at 18:40 #133544You can take the man out of the betting shop, but ………..

That’s just your opinion. At least I don’t come on here stick myself on a pedestal and just rubbish a post without backing it up which is all you have done – perhaps that is all you have to offer?

What’s more difficult to do Stilvi is judge pace from your armchair. The horse has been held up in the past and last time out ran in snatches…….wouldn’t be so sure Choc took a pull could be that’s just the way the horse runs. If he did take a pull perhaps he wanted to ensure the horse never got away from him and burned itself out……….or maybe he just wanted a lead because the horse runs better that way……..could be a number of reasons.
I would agree that the water jump should be eliminated it is the worst type of jump you can make a mistake at. Not only can it cause severe injury it confuses novices and knocks their confidence for 6………could well be that’s why Choc found himself on the floor…….or maybe he jumped off it cos he knew you had a few quid on it
January 5, 2008 at 19:31 #133557FoF,
That’s Andrew Thornton, not Robert (Choc) Thornton.

January 5, 2008 at 20:23 #133565Just hope the mare’s ok – the stable have got enough problems at the moment and I think the horse is well thought of….

I stand corrected……….cheers Did they both come out the same box or are they unrelated?
January 6, 2008 at 08:19 #133612Hello,
Yep, Miss Mitch made a mistake at the water that cost the race.
Unfortunately the camera angle for the take-off was Behind the horses’, which was bit strange. In my humble opinion, the horse hurt itself, hence the dropping back and ensuing fall.I hope not, but we may find out today that Miss Mitch is now injured and possibly side lined…
No jockey fault here!!!

January 7, 2008 at 18:47 #133915Hi all
I was working with Andrew Thornton for ATR this afternoon at Taunton, so asked him on your behalf about Miss Mitch.
He confirmed the mistake at the water, and said she went on to jump the next fence alright but not quite as well as the early ones. With that in mind, he was trying to get her back into a rhythm without bossing her around as the ditch approached, hence the reason that she slightly lost her place. Unfortunately, his sympathetic horsemanship was not rewarded – and he was sent flying.
The good news is that she was sound after the race and appears to be fine back home, so – fingers crossed – we should see her again before too long.
A general point about water-jumps: they are built to much kinder specifications these days, to avoid the back injuries they often caused in the past. They are only 3 inches deep, so landing in the water is not necessarily a problem in itself – just like splashing through a puddle. But, for obvious reasons, it becomes a major issue if the horse catches the exit lip with its hind feet on the landing side.
Hope that helps – I’m sure we will all be watching with particular interest when she reappears.
