I’ve just come in from pottering about in the garden and thought I’ll just check on the Paddy Power site to see what time Punchestown starts. Only saw Musselburgh and Lingfield on the “next races” list. Got as far as thinking, “It must have been abandoned but the weather isn’t that…” when I got that stomach lurch.
Oh.
It isn’t the weather.
It’s Michael O’Sullivan, isn’t it.His poor family, and although he did plenty and got far in just under 25 years, that’s so much less than anyone’s fair share.
“I hope that racing was a passion of Michael’s and not just a job.”
Patriot, there’s a lovely photo of him on the Sporting Life website with Marine Nationale after the Royal Bond. He’s got his hand under the horse’s chin and is kissing his nose, the horse has his ears pricked and both of them are lightly mud spattered and happy looking.February 16, 2025 at 14:36 #1720761Terribly sad news.
RIP
February 16, 2025 at 15:16 #1720765A selection of the tributes paid to Michael O’Sullivan:
February 16, 2025 at 15:19 #1720766There is such a sense of poignancy about Michael’s last big race winner: Embassy Gardens at Tramore on New Year’s Day. A year which started so brightly before tragedy struck just a few weeks later.
RIP.
February 16, 2025 at 16:17 #1720767A great talent just starting to really flourish and come into his own that has now been taken far too soon from not only the racing world (that I have no doubt he would have surely lit up for many years to come) but also from a devastated family who I can give nothing but my very best wishes and heartfelt condolences to.
Thank you and RIP Michael.

February 16, 2025 at 20:20 #1720773A reminder of the risk that these guys and girls take every time they jump in the saddle.

February 16, 2025 at 20:23 #1720775Very sad news, RIP
February 16, 2025 at 20:59 #1720778Tragic news, my sincere condolences to Michael O’Sullivan’s family and friends.
Sport shouldn’t be a matter of life and death, but racing is capable of providing both the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. I hope that Michael’s participation in the sport gave him more thrills and amazing experiences in only a few years than most people get to have in a far longer lifetime. I rather suspect it will have done.
RIP Michael O’Sullivan
February 16, 2025 at 21:12 #1720782Has Dunwoody ever got over not being able to experience the thrill of racing …no , I think the words of Steve McQueen say it best … I have the t-shirt ..
February 16, 2025 at 21:19 #1720783So true, HDLG. Thanks for sharing it.
February 16, 2025 at 21:56 #1720786Thanks to others who’ve expressed my feelings far more eloquently than I could.
This sport of ours can be so cruel.RIP Michael O’Sullivan
Value Is EverythingFebruary 17, 2025 at 08:17 #1720791The real heroes of the sport. Brave brave mad men and women. Rest for a while Mikey, for you have the rest of time to ride Marine Nationale, Jazzy Matty, Dessie, Arkle, Red Rum, Shadowfax et al. I shall try to remember you as often as I can.
“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”
February 17, 2025 at 17:35 #1720805Very sad news.
February 22, 2025 at 11:10 #1721089Lovely tribute by itv racing. He seemed an exceptional human being. RIP.
February 22, 2025 at 12:37 #1721106There was a minute of silence for him before racing at Ludlow on Wednesday. It was immaculately observed. The only sound was the horses hooves and the jangling of their tack as they walked around the paddock. It was all rather sad but strangely beautiful at the same time.
