A bit of repetition for the first half of this . . .
Sprint stars set for Valley showdown
08 Feb 2010
Racing Victoria LtdSerious racing fans are set for a treat this Saturday with the sport’s hottest sprinters
nominated for the Group 1 Pulse Pharmacy William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley.Three-year-old filly Black Caviar is joined in the entries by a star-studded cast
including Nicconi, Starspangledbanner, Wanted, Headway, Shellscrape, Light Fantastic, Sniper’s Bullet and Turffontein for what shapes as a salivating 1200-metre showdown.A total of 14 horses, including the five first placegetters in last month’s Coolmore Lighting Stakes (1000m, Group 1) at Flemington, were nominated for the $500,000 feature when entries closed with Racing Victoria Limited (RVL) on Monday.
Black Caviar, who resumed with a stunning win in the Australia Stakes (1200m, Group 2) at Moonee Valley on 22 January, will be out to take her unbeaten streak to six in what is her maiden foray into open Group 1 company.
The filly is one of three entries from the Peter Moody stable with Lightning Stakes
runner-up Wanted and Group 1-winning filly Headway the others.Nicconi, who has won two of his three starts at Moonee Valley, will use the William Reid as his springboard to an international campaign after winning the Lightning Stakes, the opening leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, at his most recent appearance.
Along with Nicconi, trainer David Hayes has entered promising Salinger Stakes (1200m, Group 2) winner Eagle Falls who boasts wins at six of his 12 starts.
Three-year-olds Shellscrape and Starspangledbanner, who finished third and fourth
respectively in the Lightning Stakes, are amongst several horses who will gallop at Moonee Valley on Tuesday morning in preparation for the race.Sniper’s Bullet, who was scheduled to resume in the Sportingbet Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield last Saturday but was scratched owing to a poor blood picture, is chasing a hattrick of Group 1 victories.
Light Fantastic and Turrfontein have both tasted success at the highest level and the pair will be chasing more Group 1 glory when they resume from spells in the William Reid.
The Mick Price-trained Light Fantastic is owned by Moonee Valley Racing Club chairman Bob Scarborough and has been set specifically for this Group 1 event.
A pair of $200,000 Group 2 miles spearheads Saturday’s support card with the
Top Cut Alister Clark Stakes (1600m)
for three-year-olds and the
Sunline Stakes (1600m)
for mares.
The Alister Clark shapes as a rematch of the CS Hayes Stakes (1400m, Group 3) run at Flemington on 30 January with the first five placegetters, headlined by race winner Take The Rap, amongst the 12 entries.
In the Sunline Stakes, Zarita, a Group 2 winner at the track and distance last spring, is the star attraction, with emerging four-year-olds Casual Friday and Pagan Princess others creating interest amongst the 10 nominations.
February 9, 2010 at 23:05 #275279Black Caviar has the outside draw (9), so I suppose I’m obligated to back Nicconi (4).
February 9, 2010 at 23:08 #275282Cannonball
is now trained by Gai Waterhouse, will stay in the country, and will run in the N’ket H’cap.

If you guys like the filly then by all means stick with it. I wont be. Beneteau the clear improver at the longer trip for mine. His extra race experience will also count for plenty. Can lead or take a sit. The filly is untested in that regard.
February 10, 2010 at 23:04 #275520Black Caviar is out of the William Reid Stakes and until the spring – Southern Hemisphere time of course.
February 11, 2010 at 18:01 #275659That’s a pity.
First three from the Lightning here, so might have a fun trifecta on them (minimum stake).
Black Caviar being at a ridiculous price (1.7 or so) has hit my Nicconi bet – I’m now on at 2.61, and the current price is 5/2.

It is about time for Hayes’ supposed star 3yo Extra Zero to start showing what he is worth, so I’ll save a bit for him in the prior race.
February 11, 2010 at 22:58 #275731Whether Extra Zero wins or losses, I don’t think he’s a star in any form. The race he was beat in last time was a really poor race imo. I’ll give him one more chance before I really mark him down as worse than a second rater.
The Randwick card on Saturday excites me much more overall – both for betting and quality. It could be a Gai Waterhouse benefit, and that will mean some classic quotes in winning interviews. I’ll be stunned if she doesn’t refer to More Joyous as "the best filly in Australia" if she wins.
February 12, 2010 at 06:23 #275746
Yeah, was thinking of a £10 acca at betfair SP. Races are 20 minutes apart (BHA take note), so one ought to be settled before the next one starts.
Australian times:-
3.25 Extra Zero 3.7
3.45 More Joyous 1.9
4.05 Nicconi 3.45
4.25 Manhattan Rain 2.3Prices are from last night.
February 12, 2010 at 08:11 #275755I suppose the first thing for me to do is to find out whether this track is left-handed or right-handed.
Victorian Festival moves to Kilmore for cup
11 Feb 2010
Racing Victoria LtdThe first of five country cups to be showcased under the banner of the 2010 Melbourne
Festival of Racing will be run this Sunday afternoon at Kilmore.A quality field will gather on Valentine’s Day, less than an hour from Melbourne, for the
running of the $110,000 Sportingbet Kilmore Cup (1600m).The Listed race headlines a bumper nine race card which commences at 12.45pm (AEST), and offers an entertaining day for the entire family.
The Excessories Fashions on the Field competition will prove a hit with the ladies, whilst the kids, who are admitted free, can enjoy a host of complimentary rides and activities.
Gates open at 11am with adult admission $15 and concession / pensioners $10.
The first lady of racing Gai Waterhouse will add some colour to the Kilmore Cup when she saddles up the topweight Joku, who’ll be ridden by Sydney-based jockey Nash Rawiller.
A last start winner of the John Dillon Stakes (1400m, Listed) at Caulfield, Joku must carry 59kg, but is yet to finish further back than second in seven starts over the distance.
The Clinton McDonald-trained pair Pacino and Rolling Stock will be worthy rivals as will this season’s Moonee Valley Cup runner-up Irazu who is the only horse in the field boasting a win over the track and distance.
Others key runners are Inkster, Scenic Scene, Tongi and recent Bairnsdale Cup winner Encroacher who finished sixth in this race 12 months ago.
Last start Flemington placegetter True Tales and promising four-year-old Bertonic are also capable of winning the cup, but both have accepted at Moonee Valley on Saturday also so they may not take their place at Kilmore.
After the Kilmore Cup, the Festival of Racing remains in regional Victoria for the running of the Listed $200,000 Luxbet.com Mornington Cup (2400m) next Wednesday, 17 February.

And Betfair are amazingly speedy at settling all bets on Australian racing in comparison to racing in Britain and Ireland.
Another big 3yo has been ruled out until the spring.

Denman’s Australian Guineas chance is getting stronger every second it seems. Starspangledbanner’s not going to try his luck over a mile, So You Think is out through a problem, the We’re Gonna Rock hope never materialised, and Manhattan Rain has to run tomorrow.
February 12, 2010 at 08:52 #275766Short straight, with an uphill finish.
I think I’ll try looking for a horse with course form.
February 12, 2010 at 08:56 #275768I think a contributing factor to them thinking about the N’ket H’cap for Manhattan Rain, was they didn’t want to take on both Denman AND So You Think.
With So You Think out, it may lead them to sending Manhattan Rain to the Guineas.
February 12, 2010 at 09:29 #275772I didn’t know about Shamoline Warrior until I read your link Jose.
He’ll be getting the nickname Sicknote.
Never mind, I think there are several oldsters out next week.

Shamoline Warrior seems to have some sort of allergy. It has appeared as a viral infection over the last few weeks. The stable had a similar problem a while back with Whobegotyou and that was resolved with new bedding. The horse is as sound as a bell and will now get a light weight for the Cups in the Melbourne spring.

I suppose the first thing for me to do is to find out whether this track is left-handed or right-handed.
The easy part about Oz racing is that all tracks in N.S.W ( Sydney ) and Queensland ( Brisbane ) are right handed and all the rest of the country are left handed.
Moonee Valley is like Chester and same direction. The straight is uphill but relatively short.
Randwick has a much longer straight, a bit like Newmarket ( without the straight mile ) with a dip and uphill run to the line.
February 12, 2010 at 10:57 #275793Yeah, I had a look at Shamoline’s MC price, but he is still less than 40! I was thinking 160 might be reasonable.
Presumably, it was this same thing that kept him out of the Derby?
Just in case there’s any confusion, my course configuration post was about Kilmore, but it seems to apply to MV as well!

LOL. Yes they are similar tracks. Plenty of trainers avoid both.
Yes it looks to be the same problem as last spring in Melbourne for Shamoline W. Hopefully they sort it out properly this time. They think treatment last spring masked the problem rather than curing it. Good result for Shamardal fans yesterday via the UAE Guineas winner at 50/1.
