Gold Trip won’t win on quick ground anyway.

Apparently he’s best with cut because of his feet (though he did win the Turnbull on better ground.) And his jockey has decided he has a better chance on Without A Fight and has jumped ship.

Everything seems in place for a big run. Certainly no excuses have been forthcoming from Mullins or Casey so far?

    Is Willie out there now?

Anyone in the UK going to be getting out of bed for this?? I’m at work 3 hours after the off and worried if I do get up and start screaming the house down at 4am the rozzers might come calling!!

The latter scored 15/15 on the OLBG Melbourne Cup blog so I’ve backed it, too. Just gearing up for a night of Australian racing!

Grauniad very keen to tell us how unpopular the race is in Australia…but if you read to the end, if I’ve got it right about 40% of those surveyed are going to bet on the race and nearly 60% are going to watch it.

About 10 million of the UK population watch the Grand National and 20 million the most recent football world cup final.

We spoke to a few Australians and people from New Zealand that were in the UK this summer and they all seemed to love the race.

My selection is Magical Lagoon- 125-1 to win and 90-1 without Vauban with b365, and a bit ew 5pl with Paddys at 100-1.

This is what one Aussie tipster had to say about her (my thoughts in brackets)

LAGOON – TAB Odds: $151 Form: 5x0x06x906 – She has failed to do much (over trips up to half a mile too short) since coming to Australia on the back of some victories in Ireland and England (these wins being the Ribblesdale and the Irish Oaks- whilst not vintage editions, they were still better than anything that passes for a middle distance group race in Oz) . Was in the finish of the Geelong Cup recently (having made all the running till she was nearly put over the rail and did well to finish so close considering), but at Flemington she will be one of those horses you just hope stays out of the way of whatever your money is on (OK Darren).

She has never raced over this far but is by Galileo and there’s some stamina on the dams’ side too. The ground should be quick (if forecast rain holds off till later), which should suit. She has a nice draw to get a good position but enough cover to avoid overdoing it in the first mile which would be her downfall.

I like to a couple so I’ll go with another Galileo, Okita Soushi, who should like ground and trip too. He’s got a rotten draw but tends to be dropped in anyway so it mightn’t be too much of a problem.

I thought it was eye catching that Magical lagoon had been running over trips too short until last time

If she’s still the horse she was she has several lbs in hand

    And shouldn’t be 150/1

    Iv backed 4
    Absurde 11.50
    Lastotchka 23.0
    Okita soushi 75.0
    Magical lagoon 150.0

What a fabulous race I know very little about it but in recent years have been up early bright eyed and bushy tailed for this race.

    Absurde

    each way

if a top former British horse fails a vets test later this horse could be the main beneficiary.

the Mullins second string but potentially better treated by their ascot form. Mullins a master of subterfuge and half of Britain on the other horse who is yet to race in such an exacting race on the flat despite routing the field at Ascot. Just like the Ebor Willie has booked a top jockey for the second string and he has in Zac Purton a top Aussie jockey who is desperate to win this race from his position of Hong Kong’s top jockey year on year. Frankie Dettori is mercifully starting his suspension now and the stewards always come down on his style of riding hard in this race. But he was the choice at York and won well. If Zac thought he could win this race on another horse he’d have gone in that direction elsewhere. Ryan Moore’s fantastic ride on Saturday night remains fresh in the mind but this may not be the cakewalk many people think it is going to be.
    military mission

    each way

nice low draw and great form on the Balance.

    Gold Trip

    each way

    in very good order

    More Felons

    each way

drawn out in the car park but gets a massive pull from non runner. Experienced and controversial jockey on board ,who aims to win. Gets bundles of free energy despite seemingly impossible draw.

Did he just give the crowd the fingers??
Or was it for 2 in a row?
He picked the right horse anyway.
Vauban ran a good race just all a bit fast for him on the ground perhaps.
Magical Lagoon went off like a cut cat, though the winner was so good she wouldn’t have got near him anyway.
