On the basis that he’s ridden 92 winners in Ireland in his career, and 2859 in UK, that makes it 2951, so only 49 to go.
That is based on 90 winners this season to date according to Post website.
Welcome correction by anyone who has better numbers.
November 14, 2008 at 04:57 #189669I really don’t know about any corrections, The Eye Of Sauron, would sound about right, but it’s a phenomenal achievement, from the guy, he’s a true legend.
November 14, 2008 at 19:12 #189731Phenomenal is right.
It seems a very long time ago now that Stan Mellor’s 1,000 was considered the pinnacle.November 15, 2008 at 00:47 #189799AP has shredded the record books – a phenomenal athlete, the like of which we may never see again.
November 15, 2008 at 01:27 #189810Are all AP’s winners confined to GB & I? Has he never ridden anything home in France or Italy or Germany or even the US? Kind of suprised by that if it’s the case.
November 15, 2008 at 03:30 #189843Phenomenal is right.
It seems a very long time ago now that Stan Mellor’s 1,000 was considered the pinnacle. If he were in anyother sport he would be on the front pages of the sports sections every day for his achievements. The best there has ever been over jumps by a long way.
November 26, 2008 at 03:02 #192181AP made it 99 for the season at Lingfield today.
Up to 2960 in UK and Ireland now.
December 1, 2008 at 22:02 #193621Up to 107 this season- 2968 and running.
December 1, 2008 at 22:34 #193630AP McCoy
This is a man built like a machine, in complete control of his own body. Pain is not a barrier to this man. Unless it is physically impossible for AP to ride he will be there present and correct. Never will a horse he is on lack assistance from the saddle. This is a man who has re-written all record books and set new standards. He has raised the bar so high that now nobody can even compete with him for the championships.
Nobody has dominated their sport to the extent AP has. He is a class apart a through living legend. The real joy about AP is that he plys his trade every day unless injury forbids. Unlike most other sports stars this Guy is on Our tv’s almost every day. To compare this guy to any other sports star around would do him an injustice. Some may brand what I have said as just another opinion. Well I believe it to be fact.
How many times has he won on a horse and we say to ourselves or someone there with us "only For McCoy"!!!
Can i just leave ye with this thought, When he retires he will leave us with such a void,he is simply irreplaceable.Never will we see another one like him. When his records are broken then and only then wioll i agree that we have seen one better.
And when he does go it will be a dark day for racing!!!
December 1, 2008 at 22:36 #193631I said the other day, if he had been so successful in other sports, as he has been in Horse Racing, then he would have been honoured by now.
The guy is an absolutely brilliant jockey, a fantastic guy too.
For those who havent seen it, although it is a few years out of date now, hid DVD is a very good watch, and shows you what he is like, away from horse racing.
December 1, 2008 at 22:41 #193633I currently make it 2966 (I made a mistake when replying on a similar thread before). He appears to have won:
2966 jump races (87 in Ireland)
1 disqualified win in a jumps race
9 flat races (6 in Ireland)The flat races are jump vs flat jockeys and some early Irish races in 1993-94.
mike.
December 2, 2008 at 01:18 #193660Cheers Michaela- will use your figures as definitive.
December 2, 2008 at 19:53 #193832What’s the highest he has finished in Sports Personality of the Year? Did he make the final shortlst the year he won 289?
There isn’t a British sportsman, other than perhaps Phil Taylor, who has dominated their sport over the last 12 years+
I hope when he retires, and hopefully that’s a long way off, he is given some kind of Special Award
December 2, 2008 at 21:37 #193856A collossus of a sportsman. No argument. But one minor caveat. The quality of his contemporaries. Take AP out the equation and would anyone have dominated in his absence. I think not. IMO the second best NH jockey during AP’s tenure was Micky Fitz. Now….. had he had the Pipe retainer would he have ridden as many winnners season on season as McCoy…I think not. My point is , basically its been AP first then the rest in a heap a fair distance back…. always a sign the oppposition aren’t up to much.
