And it breaks my heart to report this one. Mattie – not a household name and I’m sure most won’t have heard of him. More known in the North and as game and brave and tough as a horse comes. Never fell in his whole career and beat more talented horses through sheer grit. Happily, he was much loved and his owner has written a heartfelt tribute to him in Sunday’s RP. But he’s died at only 16. Doesn’t say what happened to him, but he so deserved a longer retirement.

Heart failure according to Twitter. Very sad but clearly well loved. R.I.P.

Certainly remembered here, he raced in similar contests to Outlaw Tom and I’m sure in the same race on at least one occasion. He had 10 wins from 75 runs and with 9 seconds and 11 thirds a decent return at his level.
Not the most high profile performer but certainly not forgotten in this quarter.

Thank you Tonge I appreciate that. Don’t do social media so I miss stuff.

Maybe there’s something to be said for keeping a bit for yourself. Mattie ran his heart out.
