In the comment column in The Times today, Lydia Hislop bemoans the relegation of the world class racing at Ascot this week to second place behind the "fashion" and "celebrity" rubbish.

    An excellent piece- read it at

    There was a short piece by Marcus Armytage in The Telegraph on another traditional aspect:

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

    Few sporting events can boast a ‘Diplomatic Tent’;
still fewer, it seems, the diplomats to fill it.

    This year, to make room in the grandstand, it has been situated in the old saddling-up area of the racecourse.

    The tent is restricted to ambassadors, Heads of Mission (same sort of thing), the Household Division (people employed by the Queen) and Lord Lieutenants.

    It was empty at lunchtime but one couple braved it for tea.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

    Loved the comment by the vivacious fashion girl, "The Queen’s not wearing a baseball cap…. They were offering 1000/1."

    That would have been something to see, wouldn’t it? Like my mother in Oz, dressed up in her Barmy Army gear watching the test matches on the box!
