Canford Clifffs picked Dick Turpin up in the St James Palace much easier than the 1l verdict suggests, and 2 racecourse gallops suggest he won’t lack in fitness.
Oppose him at your peril.May 13, 2011 at 23:21 #355335i cant understand why anyone would want to back cityscape, jan vermeer, dick turpin, or any of the other horses.
i guess its superstition, trying to back against Canford Cliffs incase it ever gets beat, if and when.
me personally thinks canford cliffs wont be beaten this season. i hope hannon sends him to the breeders cup mile, because goldi’s attempt for a fourth will be well and truly sabbotaged.

Oppose him at your peril. That was my instinct, and I’m certainly not worried about the lack of a run. The Lockinge winner has recently almost always been having his/her seasonal debut, but I’m just concerned that Dick Turpin beat him twice in the opening months of last season. He’s an April foal too so should still be improving even now.
May 14, 2011 at 07:03 #355349You might wonder why Twice Over is in this race. It could be that the connections would like him to have a run before the Prince of Wales Stakes at Ascot. But it could be because they think he has a chance of winning it. On official ratings the top three contenders are within three pounds of each other. Two years ago Twice Over finished in front of Paco Boy in this race, so he is no mug over a mile, although he is probably a bit better over further. If he plays to his strengths today, and gallops all the way, or at least from the six marker, he might find an early season weakness in the other two.
May 14, 2011 at 08:22 #355356I’m expecting Canford Cliffs to win and show the world why he’s got the kryptonite to take on Frankel in the future.

May 14, 2011 at 09:09 #355368One negative concerning Canford Cliffs – His only defeat last year came in a race where there wasn’t much early pace. His devastating turn of foot seems to last for about one and a quarter furlongs only, so I always feel he needs horses coming back to him a bit off a strong pace. The Ballydoyle horses set it up for him perfectly in all his wins last year.
There doesn’t look to be a whole lot of pace on today.
May 14, 2011 at 09:34 #355373Red Jazz and Shakesperean have made it before, but it is not in their interests to go quickly (both have 7f speed). The Italian horse Worthadd is the most likely to go on at a good pace, he’s won over a lot further. Usually takes it up quite early. Twice Over is also likely to push the pace setter from some way out.
Agree, a good pace is not certain, though just as likely to be a good pace as slow I’d say.
Value Is EverythingMay 14, 2011 at 09:58 #355376Canford Cliffs is the most likely winner imo, but at the 4/1 that was available earlier in the week I thought Dick Turpin was worth supporting e/w. He’ll surely be in the three if near his best, and it’s not that hard to see him turning Canford Cliffs over either.
May 14, 2011 at 11:39 #355393its ok debating about dick turpins first run aswell, but doesn’t that also boast hannons current form. it was only a measly group 2, which you expect the odds on to win very easily. imo doesnt really show anything.

The Lockinge winner has recently almost always been having his/her seasonal debut …….
Except the most recent pair of course. Not a stat to hang a hat on IMO. I’m not sure about the ratings on Worthadd. He looks a massive price to me. Twice Over could be interesting back to a mile for the first time in a while.
It will also be a hold your breath moment to see if CC settles early. For mine has to be a no bet today.
May 14, 2011 at 12:21 #355403No, trends-wise it’s a horrible race and I think the 4yo 1m division this year will just be a sit-and-watch category.
My instinct was Canford Cliffs is a certainty, then I sat down and thought about it and thought not, then I thought Cityscape each-way was a decent punt, at which point I watched the Bet365 Mile again and thought otherwise…
I couldn’t possibly have Twice Over, not in a million years, but Cityscape should have a huge chance of placing.
May 14, 2011 at 13:24 #355409Dick Turpin has a terrible win to run ratio is Group 1 races, cannot see him winning this to be honest I think he is overrated on account of his beating a ring rusty Canford Cliffs a couple of times last term. ALways been a touch short on class when up against genuine G1 performers.
Remember Ravens Pass and HenrytheNavigator. The latter won all the big mile races in spring and summer until Ravens Pass finally showed he was the better horse once he got more experience into him
Canford to win I think but Worthaad is an interesting prospect.
Zarkava do you know why Jan Vermeer was withdrawn? The only reason I can think of is that he is owned by the same people as Canford Cliffs and since the former is no breeding prospect and they paid a tidy sum for the latter. It would be detrimental to their business to risk CC being beaten by JV. SHame though as I like JV and hope to see him soon
PS> ANyone else think Emma SPencer is hopeless!?
May 14, 2011 at 13:46 #355413Because he’d be hopelessly outpaced?
May 14, 2011 at 13:53 #355414Aww ok Zark that is a bit harsh! It might be a nice pipe opener for the horse and let Aidan see if he might perform well at 10f. ANyway all academic as the horse has been withdrawn.
May 14, 2011 at 14:43 #355418I’ve done Red Jazz win and place. Ran a big race in the QE2 and had a nice pipe-opener in Dubai. Might get an easy lead.
May 14, 2011 at 14:54 #355419Was underwhelmed by that performance to be honest. When asked his response was not exactly electric compares to past winners. Can see Frankel beating this later in the season, if Frankel comes out the gates like he did at Newmarket. Going to have to improve to beat Frankel.
