Hannon/Hughes have won this the last two years with Paco Boy, they have the two market principals with year in Canford Cliffs and Dick Turpin.
Should be a cracking race with Twice Over, Red Jazz also entered.
It’s difficult to oppose Canford on his return to action but he did take a while to come to the boil last season and may well need the run, current best price of 10/11 at Hills does look a tad skinny to me. For me Dick Turpin is the value at 4/1, he looked in good order first time out this season and should push his stablemate close.
Tempted to back CC to win and DT e/w, what do you think chaps?
May 10, 2011 at 16:57 #354845It would be one of two options at this (antepost) stage. Oppose CC or don’t have a bet. I’m tempted to go with Cityscape but can’t see him beating Dick Turpin. I think Cityscape will turn up because there won’t be any other options bar France and Ireland until the Autumn – unless its an awful Summer in England weather-wise. There will be a few showers during the week and its set to get milder as we get closer to Saturday.
I will just wait for the day and do a CC-DT-Cityscape tricast
May 10, 2011 at 17:00 #354846A horse i think who was going to be a top 4yo and that is.
JAN VERMEER.Showed speed last year and being a Montjeau you thought he stay a 1m4 but he did not. now back in trip and i hope he up with the pace like his 2yo races. No doubt he can play a big role in this race. And who knows might win it.May 10, 2011 at 19:12 #354858A horse i think who was going to be a top 4yo and that is.

I wouldn’t worry too much, early last season he was still learning and a bit green even in 2000 Guineas he was pulling hard early on but has settled fine in his races since then. Hannon reckons this year he’s better than ever.

May 10, 2011 at 19:53 #354862Balthazaar’s Gift doesn’t stay a mile and has dropped to a rating 16 below Canford Cliffs’. Beacon Lodge is 3 from 2 at Newbury and is in form. However, I’m not convinced he beat much last week and only win over a mile came in France. He’s better over 7furlongs with a bit more cut in the ground. If the rain comes then by all means Cityscape has a huge chance but on good-firm ground he shouldn’t reverse the form with Dick Turpin. Jan Vermeer hasn’t been seen for 300 odd days after a dissapoining run at Longchamp and returning to a mile may not be O’Brien’s worst idea. I’m not conviced he’ll run their though and even if he does he may not be back to his best first time out so I wouldn’t back him at anything under 8/1. Premio Loco seems to like firm going and the mile is his ideal trip. 13 lengths to make up on Cityscape from October though and some with Canford Cliffs from Sussex Stakes. My not be at best after Dubai trip. Red Jazz is back from Dubai after a good run and seems as good over a mile as 7furlongs however he has yet to win over 8 or even run at Newbury. He very nearly won last years QE2 and although he may like a bit more cut in the ground if he comes back with his latest Newmarket from then he has a huge shout. Shakespearean has come closer last than first in 3 starts and proabably would benefit from rain though he should be outclassed on recent form. As much as I love Twice Over as a horse he isn’t as good over a mile as 2 furlongs further. He came close in this behind pipedreamer but this as good as or even better a field than that and although returning to a faster trip may not totally hinder him I don’t think he has the speed of the others. Worthadd has yet to be confirmed and best perfomances have come on soft. I don’t think this foreigner will do better than the others that have traveled from a far in this race. Dick Turpin is 1 from 1 at Newbury but may have used his ‘goes well fresh’ card. However, the ground shouldn’t be a worry and has finished in front of Canford Cliffs more times than he has finished behind him though Hughes knows best. Canford is unbeaten in 3 starts with favourable ground. Long time off but if back to best he should wi again and increase that 126 rating. I think he’ll need to hack up if he’s got any chance of beating Frankel later in the season as Richard Hughes claims he will. My bet will go the way of Red Jazz each-way but Twice Over with rain who’s looking for compensation from terrible World Cup run.
May 10, 2011 at 21:09 #354869I’ll take the punt that Dick Turpin can hold out Canford Cliffs. I don’t think Canford Cliffs is better than him by any large margin so I’m willing to go that way since CC is first up.
When CC beat Dick Turpin at Ascot he came from well back off a slow pace to win stylishly, but Dick Turpin also had an excuse in that he was a bit wide for the whole journey (the slow pace lessened the burden by that is still a slight disadvantage).Haven’t looked at this race closely yet but if Dick Turpin bowls along and gets a big enough break he can win. The straight course has the potential to work for him and against CC as well.
Not entirely sure how to rate Red Jazz, but I can’t rule him out of running into 2nd.
May 10, 2011 at 21:14 #354870As with Frankel, the question here for Canford Cliffs is How Far.
Probably not much, given Hughes will be tanking all over the field and playing late, so that market could be worth a look.
May 10, 2011 at 21:30 #354872If he runs Jan will be a very good horse at 1m to 1m2 this season and is up with the pace.Yes i have seen DT and CC run they are outstanding horses. But i think Jan can run well
May 12, 2011 at 16:45 #355116Vermeer out.
While the 2 Hannon colts are worthy favourites, I am also keeping a beady eye on Worthadd. I think he could pull off a surprise.
May 13, 2011 at 14:55 #355264Shall be a interesting race…..but the Lockinge is always a race that leaves me cold
May 13, 2011 at 17:39 #355280Vermeer out.

I think, being trained in Italy, there might be people underestimating him. He sure as hell fits a lot of the trends, he’s made a fair bit of cash from his races (so there’s some class), he’s never finished out of the top three (so there’s ability), and he was in decent form last year.
25s is a great e/w price.
Out of the others, I think Dick Turpin is the one closest to the head of the market who I’d want to be on.
FWIW, Canford’s the sort of horse who I want to take on, any time.

So don't run, just like the others always do
May 13, 2011 at 17:50 #355283Im having an each way on Worthadd, ridden by world cup winning jockey Mirco Demuro, has won plenty of races and stays the mile. 25/1 is a huge price.
May 13, 2011 at 20:40 #355314Am a great fan of Canford Cliffs, but first time out, so unproven this year; should surely be odds-against.
My 100% book:
Canford Cliffs 11/8,Dick Turpin 11/4, Twice Over 7/1, Cityscape 12/1,
Red Jazz 33/1, Worthadd 33/1, Premio Loco 66/1, Shakesperean 66/1, Balthazaar’s Gift 200/1, Beacon Lodge 200/1
Backed Dick Turpin @ 7/2, with a smaller bet on Cityscape @ 16/1 and saver on Twice Over @ 8/1.
Value Is EverythingMay 13, 2011 at 21:29 #355322What price do you make Premio Loco Ginge?
He looks a bit over priced to me.

Value Is EverythingMay 13, 2011 at 22:30 #355329I’ll sit here and say i don’t like the flat till i’m blue in the face, but i LOVE dick Turpin, really impressed me at sandown and similar run must give him a chance?!
I wouldn’t put money on it but worthadd could be one to keep an eye on too.
