Lead Artist might have needed his reappearance a bit. But looked fit enough at Sandown to do far better than he did.
The ground at Sandown was probably softer than the official “Good”. But no softer than the Darley Stakes last year… Where he’d put up his best performance prior to today.
Admittedly he had also been a bit disappointing on his only other start on a softish surface in the Listed Sir Henry Cecil. Interesting that run also coming after a short break (although much less of a break than at Sandown). It is possible he isn’t as consistent on a softer surface or maybe needs a run to get his head into gear.
…But it was noticeable how Lead Artist raced at Sandown with his head to one side from halfway up the straight… As if something was hurting. I haven’t noticed him do that before and certainly not today.
So imo It’s more likely there was a physical problem with the horse rather than purely fitness or a ground issue.
Judge for yourselves:
Value Is EverythingMay 17, 2025 at 16:44 #1730735The last furlong today was slower than the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th furlongs.
So it seems as if Dancing Gemini was outstayed today.
Ascot is a stiffer mile than Newbury, so – all other things being equal – the Sussex may well be Dancing Gemini’s best chance of Group 1 glory, unless there’s a slow pace in the Queen Anne.Value Is EverythingMay 19, 2025 at 08:37 #1730866hdlg, better going on course for it if you want a big bet!
