Just watched a replay of today’s racing from Chester and I was mightly impressed with Lily’s Angel in the Lily Agnes.
The reason the horse caught my attention is a bit of a long-winded one, but here goes.
I backed a horse called Pontius Pilate at Musselburgh at the beginning of April and watched the race in a pub that had no commentary. I was incredibly impressed as Pontius Pilate ran extremely green but somehow managed to finish in a very promising second. Or at least that’s what I thought.
The colours of Pontius Pilate were very similar to that of a horse called Stonefield Flyer, and it was in fact Stonefield Flyer that ran second. Given that Stonefield Flyer was an unbacked outsider and ran incredibly green, I put him in my notebook as a sure fire future winner.
Next time out Stonefield Flyer ran at Newcastle and I backed him heavily to beat the horse that beat him first time up – Hamza. Hamza was withdrawn at the start and I thought, "Oh well, big Rule 4 but still a winner". Except it didn’t go to plan, Stonefield Flyer was beaten by Lily’s Angel. Are you following?
Stonefield Flyer then ran at Newcastle yesterday, and I couldn’t resist another big bet by my standards – I was still incredibly taken by his first time-up second to Hamza. Thankfully, the colt – backed from 5/2 to 15/8 – won impressively, by 6L in fact.
Which brings me on to today. The horse that beat Stonefield Flyer at Newcastle first time – Lily’s Angel – was entered at Chester. I took the 7/4 early on and noticed that the horse had won almost as soon as the race had finished. But it was only half an hour ago that I watched the race. The filly effectively waived her stall two advantage by starting very slowly (she also played up behind the stalls prior to the race), sat second to last throughout the first three furlongs, and then showed fantastic speed to run through the field and win going away.
I’ve just taken the 12/1 about her (with Stan James) winning the Queen Mary. I’ve got nothing to go on other than I’ve been very impressed with what I’ve seen so far and that the form line is very impressive to my untrained eye. She looks a very speedy early type to me. Fingers crossed.
May 4, 2011 at 21:20 #353784I was keen to see how she got on but had written her off after two furlongs. She did exceptionally well to win from where she was and I wouldn’t want to be against her.
May 4, 2011 at 21:41 #353801The star of the show but for Wonder of Wonders. Only caught the last furlong on Channel 4 but watched the +1 feed and couldn’t believe she’d won after breaking like that. Queen Mary beckons, although probably to York for the Marygale next? Or maybe the Hilary Needler?
May 4, 2011 at 21:44 #353802True Corm. I’d love to know what price she touched in-running given the circumstances.
I dare say a 3.0 shot at the off, then blows her stall two position and sits next to last throughout the race, in behind runners at Chester no less. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if she touched 30.0 or 40.0 in-running.
But like you say, terrific performane to come from where she was to win going away by nearly two lengths. Very impressive.
May 4, 2011 at 21:45 #353804Fahey spoke about going to Beverley I think.
May 4, 2011 at 21:52 #353806Zarkava, Corm,
I think – or at least I’d like to think – that she’s too classy for the Hilary Needler, but given that this is Fahey and Hannagan I wouldn’t rule out either York or Beverley.
Personally, considering she’s had three quickish runs in succession, I’d like to see her put away for Royal Ascot now.

Watched race on C4. Think they mentioned touched 13.3 in running on bet fair to answer your question

May 4, 2011 at 23:27 #353818good luck with Queen Mary bet, Oneeye.
If you fancy her enough for that, maybe have a look at Miss Work Of Art as well from same yard, personally would have thought she was the better filly at this stage.
May 5, 2011 at 07:50 #353846Miss Work Of Art readily beat Magic City at Ascot last week. Magic City had previously won a 14 runner well-contested race at Newbury by six lengths and was favourite for the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot at the time, though Hannon seems to like him better for the 5F Norfolk Stakes.
After Lily’s Angel won at Chester, Richard Fahey was very polite to the owners of both his horses in a Channel 4 interview, but I got the impression that he thought Miss Work Of Art had the better chance at Royal Ascot. The fact the Fahey ran her at Ascot and Lily’s Angel at Chester might be significant.

Have a look at
Everyday Dave
trained by Wesley A Ward which ran in the 1.20 Chantilly on Monday, just gave it a rating of 78, will turn out to be better than the 2yo’s mentioned here

Excel.xlsMay 5, 2011 at 09:35 #353855Thanks for the info people, much appreciated.
Oddly enough, Stonefield Flyer is the horse I’m most interested in. It’s been a long time since I saw a horse run so green first time out.
Trained by 27-year-old Keith Dalgleish, Stonefield Flyer looks a very promising colt to me, and it’s only through watching the progress of this horse – and the subsequent form lines – that my attention was brought to Lily’s Angel.
May 5, 2011 at 09:55 #353856interesting spot with Everydave Dave, BluesBrother, how would you rate him compared to Magic City and other 2yos in UK at present?
Also, what do you make of the 2yo filly Wes Ward won with at Chantilly, Judy The Beauty?

Excel.xlsThanks for the heads-up on Everyday Dave and your ratings.
I’m not sure which race Everyday Dave will be targetted at at Royal Ascot, but I guess he won’t be in competition with Lily’s Angel or Miss Work Of Art in the Queen Mary. I think Wesley Ward’s preferred entry for the Queen Mary will be Tiz Terrific who won at Longchamp last Saturday, with Judy The Beauty who won at Chantilly on Monday as a second string.
With all three of his horses running well at Keeneland (Tiz Terrific second and the other two winning) before coming over to France, and all three winning there, it seems Ward might well continue the success he has had at the last two Royal meetings. He certainly gets his horses to ping out of the stalls and be at full gallop before some of our horses have woken up. Let’s hope we are a bit better prepared for him this year, and according to your ratings Miss Work Of Art has a good chance of beating his fillies.
May 5, 2011 at 11:45 #353879Stan James have got Power, Aidan O’Brien’s 2yo colt, in their betting for the Queen Mary. Lump on and see if he gets the snip before hacking up? If he doesn’t, claim he was inelligible for the race anyway?
May 5, 2011 at 14:39 #353912Think that’s an error on Oddschecker’s side Zarkava, as I’ve placed my bet with Stan James, and the only two horses they were quoting at the time (and still are) are Miss Work Of Art and Lily’s Angel.
May 5, 2011 at 16:20 #353935Apparently Miss Work of Art beat Lily by 5 lengths in a gallop at home. This doesn’t tell the whole story as Lily is extremely tough and needs a proper race to bring out her best but Miss Work of Art is clearly the better at this stage and its rare that Fahey speaks so highly of horses as he does this filly. That said he was geninely suprised at Lily’s acceleration yesterday, as was Hanagan. It wasn’t the strongest renewal but you can’t argue with the way she did it after that start (although they went off too quick which helped her) and the time was only .3 secs below the big sprint handicap later on the card.
May 5, 2011 at 19:23 #353961think you will find the time diff was 1.3 secs vincey with the sprint hcap.
Interesting comment about the difference on homework, about the same as I rate the pair on time figures at present. -
