    Does gamble gamble?

    Does gamble gambol?

Does gamble gambol while he’s gambling?

Does gamble gamble while he’s gamboling?

These are the questions I feel go unasked for fear of what the answers might be.

I dare to ask the unaskable.

    What are we saying?

I am watching a tribute concert to Leonard Cohen
and I have placed Ian’s perceptive performance up there side by side with the great poet cum punk hero of yesteryear.
    We all gamble I believe
    it’s just a question of
    degree. Gambolling is a
    rarer feet. I have managed
to perfect the art in leaps
    and bounds but they are
    distinct; gambling requires concentration whilst
    gambolling is an expression
of the purest joy. They are
    rarely mixed. Sheep don’t
ask for much – just a meadow,
some grass, and to be left
in peace as a cream piece
on a sea of green in a state
    of comparative grace.
    Comparing Leonard’s philosophy
    influenced by a Zen monk
with the simplistic punk Davies is difficult, but
    not impossible. Cohen spent
    years trying to find out
who he was and how he could
relate to life in a meaningful
    way. Davies didn’t need to
    search or travel to Hydra
    he’d found Nirvana
    in his handicap book and
one coffee and one biscuit completed the holy Trinity. He didn’t need to search he’d found it ! Cohen is just a little behind him.

“Did you catch too much sun today at Chilfrome” – it’s possible, Homer, but I’m capable of clinically-insane postings in all weather conditions, tbf.

“simplistic punk Davies” – all joking aside, this is possibly one of the best (and most perceptive) descriptions of me I have ever read.

It is often said of a man: “there is more to him than meets the eye.”

With me, there’s less – a LOT less.

A Law university graduate, ex national newspaper journalist yada yada yada, I am often assumed to be many intellectual/cultural things I’m manifestly not.

“Davies didn’t need to search or travel to Hydra he’d found Nirvana in his handicap book and one coffee and one biscuit completed the holy Trinity.”

Spot on – I’m a very simple fellow, consequently with a myriad of simplistic views on life.

As for Leonard Cohen, a particularly mad ex girlfriend in London introduced me to his work in my 20s.

    Track called “Suzanne?”

Lyrics about said girl taking him down to the river?

After listening to it a few times, I must confess I found myself hoping Leonard, Suzanne (and frequently the insane ex) would jump in the aforementioned river – it sounded like music to slash your wrists to, to me!

In fact, it took TWO biscuits to cheer me up again!

    If betting is a gamble…
    then Life is a gamble

Being in business is a gamble
    might lose your money
    Going outside is a gamble
    might get run over
    or struck by lightning
    might die of skin cancer
    Staying inside is a gamble
    might lose your mind
Being in love is a gamble
    might be broken hearted
your lover might be a killer.

I long ago came to the conclusion that all life is 6 to 5 against – Damon Runyon

When I first read that Runyon line my first thought was that the 6/5 was a bit short.

I reckon it’s right out to 9/4 minimum nowadays.

    More important is Gamble alive?

The best things in life are free.
But you can give them to the birds and bees.

    As Cagney famously said…

    ‘The postman always rings twice’
    I might add..

    Once to be born
    and once to be shorn
    then lain in the lawn

    Is gamble alive ?

Life for him is just the same
as twenty years ago from a thinking perspective. He did die just over a decade ago, his head famously exploding in a small one bed flat on the east side of town where the east end boys hung out, with parts of his brain adding an extra grey tinge to an already grey ceiling. After death he metamophasised into the mind of a younger gumshoe Flatcap troubling his cases with…
“YOU HAVEN’T THOUGHT THAT OUT JIMMY !”
