Beholed!

(see thread in Horse Racing for details – !reproduced below now…)

I think it might be feasible to run a weekly competition, for fun only at first. It might be a way of trying to be a bit systematic about picking horses to lay, so there it could even be a bit eductional on a personal basis.

Ok, here’s the rules as a first stab…

One horse laid per race for the first 6 races at 3 courses (with a reserve if desired). All 18 lays to be posted prior to the off of the first of the 18 races.

    Scoring as follows:

    +3 — A winner at 14/1+
+2 — Any other winner
+1 — A loser at 10/1+
Par — A loser at between 4/1 and 9/1
-1 — A loser at between 6/4 and 7/2
-2 — A loser at between 8/11 and 11/8
-3 — A loser at 4/6 or shorter

+1 — Non-runner (might need a rule about known NRs)

With this scoring, assuming the SP is a reflection of the true chances (a sweeping statement I know), there are break even points at 4/6, Evs, and 2/1.

With the golf theme, there could be four rounds over consecutive days, with a cut at the half-way stage, and loads of opportunity for handicapping and/or match-play formats, etc., etc.

If anyone is interested in having a try, I have started a thread in the Daily Lays and Plays area, and just for today the six races will be Exeter 1-6, Naas 1-6 and Kempton 3-8, making a 2:10 start…

    Views appreciated!
That was a hard day. David, I make it you beat me by 3, but you might have done better without three NRs.

I picked a whopping 6 (six) winners, which was shocking!

(The walkover was voided/parred for settlement purposes)

    1st: DB -1, NV =
2nd: DB =, NV =
3rd: DB =, NV =
4th: DB =, NV =
5th: DB +1, NV -1
6th: DB =, NV =
7th: DB -1, NV =
(8th: walkover,pars)
9th: DB +2, NV +2

Front nine: DB +1, NV +1

    10th: DB =, NV -1
11th: DB =, NV +2
12th: DB +2, NV +2
13th: DB +1, NV =
14th: DB -1, NV +2
15th: DB +1, NV =
16th: DB +1, NV +1
17th: DB +1, NV +2
18th: DB +2, NV +2

Back nine: DB +7, NV +10 (reckon it must have got windy!)

    Overall: DB (+8) beat NV (+11) ;)

Just noticed this NV – great idea.

How about a comp – three holes every Sunday for six weeks?

(Sunday to avoid clash with Bob’s 4pp and to give people an interest both days at weekend, plus Sunday is traditionally golf day!)

If you’re happy to do the admin I’ll put up a prize of some sort.

    The TRF Open Championship?

I’ll do it but I am not good enough to have a handicap mark at golf so I assume i would get a head start?

Sounds like a good idea Cormack.

Maybe a qualifying round of 18 holes over 3 Sundays (i.e. 6 per day), with a cut, and then a further 18 holes over the next 3 Sundays…

I’m happy to do the math, as they say!

in the meantime, just for (my) fun today…
