Working in retail over the years and cashing up it was easy to count the notes at speed
The bloody pennies and five pence pieces though..😭

Like most I guess, my days of moving decent lumps of ‘king cash’ around are gone with the flexible friend, but my anecdotal evidence on-course was that the thumbing-cum-flicking-cum-fanning-cum-concertinering speed of bookies’ clerks seemed a significant number of microseconds faster than the – still impressive – thumbs of bank tellers, despite the advantage the latter had of piling the notes on a desk first

Both enjoyably mesmerising but not as remotely enjoyable as my repeated slow thumbs through desocked wedge after an afternoon’s successful tilting

    Happy days :good:

Back in the dark ages, I would always write stake, price and hoped for return on the back of the Bookies ticket and let him see me do so.

I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highways

    “Who’ll toll the bell?
    I said the Bull,
    because I can pull,
    I’ll toll the bell.
All the birds of the air
    fell a-sighing and a-sobbing,
when they heard the bell toll
    for poor Cock Robin.”

    The bookies killed the hedge
    Betfair killed the wedge
Booh hoo hoo hoo hoo !
    Didn’t yer noo ?

Simons posts on the star sports pitches are always worth a read, if for nothing other than getting a sense of what type of bet they might take. Some of the races at Cheltenham he reported on appeared to be turning over c.5/6k which will give a sense of where the market is at…
The real drawback with on course betting is the physical cash transaction element, holding 2/3k in cash is just physcially awkward to be walking around with

Didn’t the on-course bookmakers get hijacked back in the day on the way home.?

I remember a nasty incident with some vermin and ‘Fearless’ Freddie Williams.
