Couple of questions:
1) Are these 8 race cards, with a dog race divided, a permanent fixture now?
2) Does anyone know the details of any borrowings to finance their redevelopment? Any prospect of them going bust?October 15, 2008 at 22:54 #184919Regular racing all year round and lots of it, themed nights, halloween night, bonfire night, xmas, weddings, business, etc.
Easy to get to by road or rail with it’s own station, good facilities with plenty of bars and places to eat, a lot of which will be franchises bringing in more income for the course.
Popular with trainers I dare say as it seems easy to get to and easy to get a race there.
As cheap as any other racecourse and with more choice for joe public to spend his pounds on when he’s there.
Being AW and turf/NH it supports all codes and with the increasing influence of AW racing here, I’d say they’re well positioned.
It could be worse, they could be one of those remote grass tracks that either gets flooded off or has hardly any fixtures during the year and doesn’t have much for joe public punter to spend his pound on the rare times he’s there.
If anything, imo, these lonely, quirky, ill-equipped and provided grass and jumps tracks will be the first to go in the recession, as they just don’t have the earning power of places like Kempton who at least have regular income to count on.
I could be wrong though.

It is to accomodate the betting industry – they have stated a preference to have eight race cards..
October 16, 2008 at 14:14 #185003A quick glance at the results yesterday hardly suggests a punters graveyard with 6 winners from the 8 races all at 6/1 or under.
October 16, 2008 at 15:29 #185011Indeed not. It isn’t as if these are eight-race cards containing nothing but nigh-on unfathomable Banded / Classified fare, as may have been the case 18 months ago.

You’re right there were a couple of non 45-52 races to relieve the monotony
October 17, 2008 at 00:01 #185063Their is one mistake about Kempton concerning the ground for Sundays National Hunt meeting.
At the moment it is if i am correct Good, Good to firm in places.
It should be the following
Good, Good to firm in places, Standard in places.

Kempton going bust? you seen the price of cod and chips….
October 19, 2008 at 15:59 #185400i see from the kempton king george guide that it will cost a whopping £30 to get in the grandstand on boxing day, also on the front page of the gudie it shows a picture of people in the resturant watching a all weather race on the tv with a packed crowed outside. can anyone confirm that this picture hasent been doctored and there actually was a all weather meeting when more that 100 people turned up?
October 19, 2008 at 16:50 #185404I went there with one of my daughters to a weekday evening AW meeting in August last year, and it was pretty crowded, good fun and a nice atmosphere, albeit not cheap.
It was a themed "Irish Night" evening. Not the highest class racing you’ll ever see, but competitive.
I don’t know how many people were there, maybe 5000 or thereabouts.
October 19, 2008 at 20:32 #185434I think I should point out that the last time I attended Kempton’s best meeting of the year ( jumping on St Stephen’s day) there was NO train service.
In fact, it can be one hell of a place to get by public transport, imo!
I walked from Twickenham that day.In my experience, Southwell, Lingfield and Wolverhampton are much easier venues – though Lingers is starting to suffer from the similarly snot-gobbling officialdom that is the norm at Kempton, I’m afraid.
October 19, 2008 at 20:37 #185435In fairness to Kempton some of their Wednesday evening themed nights in the summer can attract reasonable size crowds, although how many are there for the actual racing is probably open to debate.
October 19, 2008 at 22:51 #185457More than most courses, it makes a bit of an effort to keep the new/occasional punter entertained and informed
I agree with Sberry
Sean, i live in twickenham. Its a quick drive but a bloody long walk!
October 19, 2008 at 23:12 #185465Nice area, Clivex!
It was a long walk, but wasn’t as bad as the time I caught a bus from Heathrow to Sunbury Cross; the thing stopped everywhere, and when it turned into Staines hospital, I felt like jumping off and getting myself admitted. The great thing about Kempton, btw, is the pre-parade area and paddock. The racing can be exciting too.

Although I have noticed the last couple of visits that KPTV seems to have died a death – whilst their attempts at humour could be a bit OTT at times, it did help add to the atmosphere and, as you said, was entertaining and informative.
Although I do wish they would do away with those awful sweatshirts they make the staff wear, I am surprised there has never been a staff rebellion!!
