13/1 on Betfair at the moment Exotic Dancer. Crazy price.
March 14, 2008 at 12:24 #150856That was a very good post Batt and you talk a lot of sense in my opinion.
I personally think that this race has been overhyped by the media to a ridiculous degree and I can’t get myself too excited about it – well no more so than I would for any other Cheltenham Gold Cup. For all his wins, Denman does not impress me as being capable of running Kauto Star even close – and I much prefer Exotic Dancer and Star De Mohaison as alternatives to Kauto Star, should anyone be looking for one.
I would not be at all surprised if the event is a real letdown for people hoping it will be a neck and neck finish between the two market leaders – I simply cannot see that happening, though of course, I have the egg removal cream at the ready, just in case.
All will be revealed a few minutes after 3.30 pm !
March 14, 2008 at 13:26 #150888Batt, my heart wants Denman to win, my head tells me that Kauto Star will win and if I was convinced that Exotic Dancer would run to his best form then he has would be the value bet.
Nice piece of splinter collecting, wouldn’t you say.
I will be sitting in my armchair, with no financial interest, with fingers crossed that all the horses will finish full of running.

March 14, 2008 at 15:12 #150955The biggest pointer to the outcome so far might be the Ryanair.
Our Vic has done what Denman done but beat Mossbank a length further with The Listener behind again. Our Vic wasn’t even a remote threat to Kauto Star in The King George.
On that form Denman needs to run a stone better than he did in the Lexus.
Granted different course different distance but many have said Denman has beat nothing.
Hope it lives up to expectations and they both come home save and sound along with all the others.
Good Luck to both
March 14, 2008 at 15:41 #150965A freak – broke their hearts.
March 14, 2008 at 15:47 #150976Wasn’t quite the epic I had hoped for but well done to Denman and connections – can’t fault the big horse one bit… he jumped and travelled really well.
Congrats to the Den-maniacs aka Himself, TDK and the others I can’t remember! No excuses, you called it correctly and your boy won well today.
March 14, 2008 at 16:09 #150999Well done Denman followers. He had one potential flaw in KS he could expose- he tried to, and luckily for Sam Thomas it was there. I had my doubts about what Denman found when he was really asked, but he keeps on and it seems that’s almost always enough with a cruising speed like his. He was born to win Gold Cups with such a profile, and not even the seemingliy indomitable Kauto Star could match his efforts over this course.
With recent winners like Kicking King, War Of Attrition & Kauto Star, I was starting to think the term ‘old-fashioned Gold Cup horse’ was starting to live up to it’s self-procalimed archaic qualities, but not so with this monster.March 14, 2008 at 16:26 #151008Gutted. Gutted. Gutted. Well done to Denman though, fantastic performance. But ohhhhhhh so hurtful
March 14, 2008 at 16:32 #151017Might seem a glib after the event – but regarding Kauto Star
… Arkle can rest easy… yet again !
I have been convinced for months that Denman would grind everything into the ground and would take the sting out of Kauto Star’s finishing speed. No use arguing that Kauto Star didn’t show his true form, not when his trainer, owner and Michael Dickinson (among others) were all adamant that the horse was better than he had ever been. Denman was simply better. I likened Denman to Mill House. Hold that thought – I now believe he is superior to Mill House. Barring interventions, Denman can win next year’s old Cup too.
Let’s face it – who among the chasers out there can stop him?

March 14, 2008 at 16:36 #151022On a related subject, Himself, I heard Big Mac mention that Paddy Power are going 7/4 Denman for next year’s GC. I’m not a very-long AP punter normally, but with KS exposed over the trip and such a poor R&SA this year, that’s clearly buying money bar injury? Trying desperately to find it on the PP website!

This is Denman’s day so I won’t say any more on Kauto. You’re right though, based on this performance, Denman will be very hard to beat at 3 miles+ next season. Good call mate, you were right about him. I thought he was more hype than anything else but he is a damn fine horse.

We’ll see what happens when Nacanor goes to fences after he wins the national that is on mar 23rd.

Thanks Kalidor. I get it wrong more often than I get it right, but when I saw Denman winning the Hennessy; that and allied to the fact that should he replcate that performance at Cheltenham, then Kauto Star would find it very difficult to peg him back. I was impressed when he won last year’s Sun Alliance but not fully convinced that he was a threat to Kauto Star at that stage. This season I became convinced that he was the real deal. Denman is a monster of a horse – and I mean that as a great compliment.
I’ll shut up now. I am just so thrilled at the outcome.

March 14, 2008 at 16:47 #151032Well the outcome was what I hoped would happen but didn’t dare think it could. He ground them all to death, jumped super and at the top of the hill Ruby started to get after Kauto. Great run by Neptune Collonges – that’s his best ever run. As somebody mentioned before, ‘ a real old fashioned Gold Cup horse’ – agree a proper old style Irish chaser – the type that should win the Gold Cup.
March 14, 2008 at 17:27 #151060I thought Kauto’s temperament might be suspect under the kind of pressure Denman was capable of, but it might have been and/or a top race too far for his constitution. Not a race of which I could have felt confident about one way or the other.
The way Neptune Collonges was running, I thought Peter O’sullivan’s words on Channel 4 might be vindicated 100% – that with racing, the winner could quite easily come from deep field – words to that effect, I thought. Yet, in the end, Denman won well, albeit having strained hard to do it.
March 14, 2008 at 18:08 #151080Nothing wrong with Kauto’s temperament. He ran a very brave race with proper stayers around him. Ruby was at Kauto a long way from home and his horse responded well.
I don’t like this saying ‘Denman broke their hearts’. Harry Findlay can up with that nonsense and that’s exactly what it is, nonsense.
Kauto rallied as well as he could under pressure, but found one too good on the day.
Findlay said this could be the only time they meet. I sincerly hope he doesn’t shy away from a rematch – Denman certainly wouldn’t!!
